Hi
I need to buy a new graphics card because my 9600GT 512mb seems to have a problem. would a 4850 512mb be a downgrade?
It's this Asus one i'm looking at, but not much point if it's a great loss in performance

No downgarde at all! Probably a 20% upgrade in certain instances. What is the problem

with your 9600gt? And what is the rest of your spec?

Ever since i installed the 9600Gt the computer just freezes up in games and sometimes just while web browsing. all was fine with my old 7300GT but it just wasn't upto the standard of the latest games.

specs.
CPU: amd athlon 6400+BE 3.2ghz
RAM: 2gb corsair XMS2
MB: asrock alive sata2glan
PSU: Corsair TX 650w
250gb samsung hard drive and a dvd drive all in a well cooled antec 300

I think your problem may be your motherboard. I beleive it uses a VIA chipset which

is known to have problems with PCI-E 2.0 cards ,which both the 9600gt & 4850 are

you may want to try a bios update before you splash the cash on a new gpu.

it's got the latest bios on it already which is 2.60, i'll try find some information on that because it would be chaper to get a new board if that's the case.

yeah thanks for that info, just been looking around and that might be the problem here.
i wonder if the guy in the local computer store will let me return a board if a buy one tomorow but still have the problem.

The only other option would be to flash the bios on the card as people had to do when

the 8800gt's first came out. Not sure if VIA chipsets cause the same problem with ATI

cards though.

I am pretty sure that the mobo is the problem , there must be people here who had

this issue with 8800gt's.

i could try find a bios to flash it with, i was planning on buying a GTX260 which is around £200, but now might buy a new motherboard and 4850. my current motherboard is quite old now.

I used to have that motherboard. It just wouldn't work with the 8800gs I bought and after doing some research it said that my VIA chipset was to blame. I then sold that and bought a 3850 512mb ajnd it worked fine, so i'm guessing that means that the problem is noly with nvidia pci-e 2 cards, but I would do some more research before splashing out.
