Sorry guys, I know there is a lot of information about this on the boards at the moment, and Search helped me find very similar discussions I wasn't able to find an answer that precisely answered my specific question, which is: -

Assuming money isn't a consideration - which of the following 2 configurations is likely to give the most powerful setup across the board?

2 x 4890s in crossfire -or-
1 x 5870

well for current dx9 dx10 games then 4890 xfire will give better performance but you will get hassle from multi-gpu/extra heat/noise etc...

5870 should dominate in future dx11 titles. If money is no object and you are not deterred by multi-gpu then either wait for 5870x2 or gtx3** series

I'm not worried about Dx11, the reality of that is surely a long way off. I'm simply interested in shredding current gen games.

Personally I'd get a 4870x2 2nd hand and then add another if that's not enough grunt at your selected resolution. 5870s are £300 and I don't see that being jusified just yet. So a 4870x2 at around £150-170 is a bargain.

But as per your question, 4890s in CF would be more powerful with current gen games.

Read a few 5870 reviews, there are loads about and good ones will compair things like 4890 CF, 4870x2 etc etc.

yes but bear in mind a 5870 will destroy current games anyway.
Also a significant factor is the single gpu aspect, you will get more consistant performance from a single gpu like the 5870.
Whereas crossfire cards will sometimes give you crazy good performance on certain titles and then on other games not so hot performance.

There are some dx11 games in the pipeline that sound good, personally I am really looking forward to alienvs predator (heh heh) and I am sure that when nvidia releases there dx11 cards you will see a lot of support for dx11

Yeah that's true, I still don't see the point of dropping £300 on a 5870 though, at least for now. There are many cheaper single GPU options that will be fine for current gen games at standard resolutions, 1920x1200 etc.

yes I agree, that 5870 performance does not wrrant £300, but if money is no object then why not?
perhaps op will consider a 5850 once we FINALLY see some reviews

I m sorry to sound blunt, but quite a few months ago when my second HD4870 died, I got two HD4890s to replace them, I had a choice between them and the X2 and GTX295
I paid £300 for them, and overclocked they roughly give about the same performance as a GTX295, why would I want to spend £300 again on a card that gives me the same ? in terms of performance, and DX11 is not reliant at this time, as there are no games currently out that have that, plus drivers are poor, okay they will improve

So I m waiting till next year, till A. the cards prove themselves
B. drivers
C. games
D Nvidia ;) I know I don't like the company but if the card is best for me it will be that
E. PRICE

money no object? wait a few weeks and get a 5870x2.

/thread

At the risk of partly contradicting myself, if I can just refine my scenario and say that money is no object to the tune of around 300 sheets. :D

Wouldn't it be fair to assume that as the single-GPU model is sitting at around the £300 mark, that the X2's price point will even further away from sensibly priced?

5870, better resale value due to not being old tech, doesn't have the headaches off Xfire, like where it will sometimes run as a single 4890 (as the other gets disabled) in games that are not Xfired yet, and also less heat, power.

less power consumption, cooler, quiet, no problem with the driver, constant framerates.

sept for the cooler part than again, they only run at 46c anyways and meh to power as i use my PC most of the time its on, I never leave it on when I m not around or asleep as the fans drive me nuts, not that its loud
