I have 5.1 speakers but I don't have a 5.1 sound card, just a standard. But Logitech supply an adapter that will allow you to plug the speakers into a stereo sound card. I've plugged them in but the Realtek HD Sound drivers are only detecting the front two and for some reason it seems to think left is right and right is left.

The centre or rear speakers aren't working either.

Any ideas?

Realtek control panel won't detect the extra speakers. As you don't have 5.1 onboard audio, the software is made for stereo. The centre and rear speaker connections would be normally be connected to other sockets. Most of the time, black and orange.

The speakers or adaptor, will upmix the stereo to 5.1. That's what is happening when you watch a film, or play music, etc.
