£5-6k - What Car?

Hi folks

Just looking for some input on what second hand car to go for with with a budget of roughly £5-6k? Looking for something a couple of years old, doesn't need to go like a rocket but would prefer a good spec and reliability. Girlfriend has already stated she does NOT want a Focus as she just does not like them so that is definitely out the question. Being looking at Seat Leons, Golfs but they seem to be quite rare round these parts at the moment.

Any advice appreciated.

I'd look at the mark 4 Vauxhall Astra

Rather nice car - well made, reliable, refined, cheap to insure and run, good to drive (although not quite as good as the Focus but vastly better than the Golf, 307 and Leon (excluding the Cupra versions))

Just avoid the 1.6 8v like the plague

Ack yeah, you're all right. Could get an e46 saloon for this money though, possibly a 323i SE for around the £6k mark.

VW Bora? The 1.8T should be a good one, and you'll be able to find them within that budget

agreed, however, go for the TDCi and not the 1.8 petrol, you'll even find Ghia's/ghia X's on 02/52 plates in this price range, mileage will probably be high but these will almost certainly be all moterway miles. Even on the zetec trim you get plenty of kit for your money.
I've just bought an '03 mondeo Graphite TDCi for £7k, i bought mine from my dealer though for the 2 year warranty i get with it, i cannot yet fault it, good performance, very economic and a hell of a nice cabin to sit in .
