50% of the worlds wealth owned by 2%

Oh really? How much would that raise? And what would they do with the money?

Naivety in the extreme.

i have no idea how much it would raise. A lot more thens being given currently. I dont know. Weve been to the moon for god sake, weve created atomic weapons, we spend stupid amounts on military. If the amount of effort and money went into those trying to bring every single person in the world above the poverty line, so they arent surviving, they can start living then it would be so much better.. Im not saying its an easy process, but it can be done in a much more efficient quicker way.

mate i will

ok, britains had a population explosion. now we have calmed down a bit. Its not an instant thing, its gradual. + they dont have contraception and people love sex.

Yes but that "explosion" (no where near what is happening in some places in Africa though) was in line with a reduction in child numbers, increased health and increased farming ability.

That's not what is happening in large parts of Africa. They are relying on outside help to keep their population increase going. There is no stability and that is one of the reasons there are so many problems.

No, we'd still be in the stone age. Yeah lets spend all our money on helping others instead of on scientific advancement...

Bearing in mind huge leaps in health, agriculture and general well being are made from the spending on space, defence and weapons...

you are the one being rude, accusing me of making the world like it is!

i wasnt accusing you directly if you look closely. and im not accusing you really, im just saying, you lot are all creating excuses about how hard it would be. Yes im sure it would be hard but no way near as hard as it should be or could be.

i said i feel like a rant, dont join in if you just want me to "go back to my beer"

You're not listening:

Throwing money at this does not fix it.

Research into finding solutions to the problems of development are continually ongoing and are often trial and error.

Change simply cannot happen over night. It's impossible, so you need to pull your head out of the clouds.

If you really care so much and want to help speed things up; go undertake an MRes or PhD on developmental studies or macro-economics.

Half the problem is that they get given so much charity, just let them get on with it. Either people will die (which solves the population crisis), or they learn to be self sustaining, develop better infrastructure on their own and have less children. Either way there is a smaller population.

According to the World Wealth Report 2007 there were 9.5 million.

So $95bn and we're all sorted.

so that means out of the top 2% the op is targeting and calling millionaires only 7.1% of that 2% are actually millionaires.

So no the top 2% aren't all millionaires not by a long shot.

Calm down, Morba wasn't for a second suggesting that this is fair or right, he's merely pointing out that for the average person they are concentrating on only getting by themselves so how can they be expected to address someone else's problems when they're wrestling with their own? They're simply not in a position to help.

Throwing money at these countries does not fix them. Re-read that sentence and allow it to sink in. We've learned this painfully over the last 30 or so years. Money is nothing without infrastructure and infrastructure is nothing without education and culture to prop it up.

The west isn't sitting back and allowing this to happen indifferently Salami. The problem is that there is no easy fix and no one really has definitive answers - it's all trial and error and very slow progress.

Of course it wouldnt fix the problem. Your exactly right, infrastrucure and from in frastucre comes educaiton and healthcare. The 2 simple rights which everyone should be entitled to which they arent getting.

why does ith ave to be a slow process?

My maths lecturer once asked us what the quickest way to sort out the population crisis in Africa was. Everyone was silent for a while, so I just came out with Genocide. He was quite taken aback and proceeded to tell us it was to get the women to use condoms. Quite simply we should blame the Pope.
