£500-£600 Build

This is where my naïveté comes in, is xfire/sli the way to go or is it just a gimmick? The basis of this build was to future proof?

Unsure if a xfire or sli motherboard is the way to go?

Well its definitely more future proof to have it, than not have it, the idea is to buy a cheap second hand card later on and double(almost) your performance, instead of replacing with a whole new expensive card.

earlier someone suggested that the hd5xxx series might be a bit out if date. thats not true and something like a 5850 is an ideal card for a £500-600 build. You certainly won't be left behind if you got, say, a 5850, used it for a few years and then crossfied it.

you can pick up a 5970 for £205 now, one went 2 days ago on the mm, crossfire/sli isnt needed for future proof, by the time you want to upgrade your gpu, there will possibly be 2 generations of newer cards to choose from, they might have significant performance increases over the last gen. i got my 5970 with accellero cooler for £260, the same price i paid for my new 5850 8 months earlier.

btw, I wasn't recommending the 5850 specifically, i was just trying to make an argument that it can still hold it's own and isn't going to be left behind, especially if it was crossfired at some point

someone suggested the 480, i believe, i would go for that with this build personally.

At this point i'm not sure it's anything but a rumour;)

its does exist, heres a picture to get you excited

nope, everything comes with the motherboard, case, psu, and thermal paste comes with the retail intel heatsink pre-applied.

if you picked any off the heatsinks i linked too, they come with a little sachet of white thermal paste too.
