Purchased an Asus G2 laptop as an Xmas prezzie for my daughter which unfortunately turned out to be faulty and for which I have now recived a full refund.

After some discussion, she is now keen on the idea of a proper PC (capable of playing games ofcourse). She likes the look of the white Akasa Zen case and I would prefer to build with an intel chip. £500 is the budget and I would appreciate it if you guys can help me with the spec.

That's a big ask with that budget, you might be better off trying to source some second hand parts from the mm. I have put this together but if you had an extra hundred quid or so you'd be able to go down the core i3/P55/H55 route. Bear in mind you are also entitled to free shipping.

As coupe69 said you are really being restricted mostly by the fact you need an operating system

What kind of games is she wanting to play ideally?

i would be looking at pushing your budget up to £600 at least for a more comfortable and better gaming experience

If its for a teenage girl, then odds on she is a student, or knows one.

If so you can get Windows 7 from the Ultimate Steal for £37.

http://www.microsoft.com/uk/education/studentoffer/default.aspx

You could get it for £30 until the start of January, but now this offer has ended, the ultimate steal website has links to Microsoft owned websites offering students this discounts.

(Therefore hope this was ok to post here on a store forum).

If she is a uni student there is a possibility she could get Windows for free depending on her course using MSDNAA if she asks her uni department.

wow thats unfair students can get it cheaper than the normal man on the street surely if everyone got it for that price there would be less copy infringement they would sell more and make more money.

Do agree with you that there would be less piracy, but unfair? My student wage is unfair! :P

lol yeah but a man on the street has to look after his family and pay for a student if there is one in the family most of the time lol well i am i have 2 students lol

Did they not get it from ultimate steal?

I got W7 Pro from it for £30 in November.

Also as a tip, the upgrade version product key works with standard versions of windows 7 pro, so don't let the words "upgrade" sway anyone.

I made the mistake of throwing £110 away for an OS. DON'T DO IT!!! Get it for free. Bearing in mind how old your daughter is she is entitled for free software at secondary school!

I know it's £50 over budget but if u can get some discount software, this would last a lot longer 'future proofing' wise and is better performace.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far and I agree that it is a struggle given the budget. I'm considering going down the i3 route for her but selfishly this will take away from my own new build budget!

I have a couple of questions about Windows 7. Some of you have mentioned that she may be entitled to a copy at a discounted cost. She is in high school, does it apply to high school students? Also, if I purchased the retail version, would I be able to install on more than one PC? As I'm going to be needing it for my own build too.

I could probably recycle some of the components from my current PC to use in her build. However, I was holding out until the Fractal Design full towers are released before starting my own new build.
