Hi, im about 2 days away from getting a new rig i ordered.

AMD 955
4GB DDR3 ram
500gb
HD 5770
500w psu coolermaster

Im kind of regretting getting the 5770, it does not look good at all. Also system i ordered has a budget motherboard, which only has one GPU slot, so i can't crossfire.

So im thinking just after christmas upgrading quickly to a HD 5850. But im hoping i would not have to upgrade the PSU(as i say all new).

Doing a test online, with a 20% allowance the power required is 480W with a 5850.

So my PSU should be ok should it not? Just want to make sure before paying £200+ for a graphics card.

You haven't even got it yet and you're going to upgrade? See how it plays first man, then if you're still dissatisfied upgrade.

Depends more on the 12V rail amperage. Probably will be ok for a 5850. I had my system running on a corsair 450W supply, before upgrading it as my system was unstable (it wasn't the power supply!).

To be honest i had no choice, as 5850 was out of stock and meant i would not get it before christmas.

It was either 5770 or 4890. But going from the 5770 thread, it don't seem too good with just one on it's own.

It will do for a few weeks and maybe end of January when prive of 5850 came down will upgrade.

I'll look at PSU specs when it arrives.

If you are so dissapointed you can return them within seven days and get your money back.

The power requirement for a 4870 is 130W maxed, a 5850 is going to be less than that. They rate 480W so awful non branded PSUs can run it.

Looks like i should be ok, i guess i could change the PSU & get a 5870 in time. Will see, smart thing would have got a motherboard that could crossfire, but too late now.

Defo not sending it back, waited long enough. Im not expecting it to do well with Arma 2, which will be the only game at moment that should test it, and will fail. But long as looks "ok" for next month or so, i can put up with it.

the 5770 is about on a par with the 4870, which is the main stream card from last gen, it shouldnt struggle too much at all tbh, not unless youre cranking up full AA/AF and eye candy
Is arma2 not quite cpu dependent? relatively I mean

tbh i find my 5770 fine, my brother plays World of warcraft on max settings including max veiw distance and gets 60fps i amy crossfire it though jus for the hell of it!!

I must be one of the few people who don't really rate the 5770 highly ..there are always way to many buts in any review of it

You wont have any problems with the coolermaster, I am running a 460 coolermaster with two 3*** cards which have a tdp of around 105watt, the 5850 has a tdp of 260watt so you should have plenty of room to breath.

take a look at the calculator below, I speced your system with 1 optical, 2 hdd, 1 expansion card and a 5850, it calculates this as 357watt.

*Btw couldnt find the amd 955 on the list so replaced that with the 940 which has the same tdp.

Specs for the 500 taken from here: http://uk.coolermaster.com/uploads/support/PRS_[RP-500-PCAP].pdf

i played demo of arma 2 with rig in sig and it runs fine as long as u don't go stupid with 8xaa i find 2xaa plenty for most games i like since getting the 4870

That's because they make more sense when crossfired, they are good cards but aren't really enough on there own at higher resolutions.
