50mm f1.8 Nikkor Manual Focus Lens

yep all of the f1.8's are ai and so will work ok assuming you can get the focus nailed should give results as good if not better than the autofocus version

while the old MF could be a tad sharper - I'd recommend like the others here to get the AF version ....

at less than F4 you've a very shallow depth of field - which means you need the focus spot on ... even with the new larger DSLR viewfinders (which still feel like a CRT TV vs IMAX when compared to older non-digital SLRS) I think you'd find it hard to get the focus right on

The D70 won't meter with the AI lens, so you'll not only have to focus manually but also set the exposure entirely manually.

It's only the D200 and higher that can properly use the non-CPU lenses (basically, anything other than AF-something or AI-P)

They are indeed. I splashed out and got the f1.2 which I adore. If you get the manual focus one you should still get the focus dot in your viewfinder though, at least I do with my D80 which I find helps with focusing a lot, especially wide open
