Okay I'm advising a friend of mine on an upgrade to bring him from DX8 to DX10 compliant! Like me he's always been an AMD man but after my recent good experiences with Intel at work, I want to offer an alternative, but don't want to tell him the wrong information. This is the spec for the AMD:

X2 5200 AM2
BFG 8800GTS 320MB
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-5400C4 TwinX
Asus M2N-SLi Deluxe

First of all how does that look? Secondly, what would the equivalent Intel spec be?

Thanks for any help on this!

Same but change the board for a DS3P or a P5B, then any Core 2 Duo that is equivalent to the price of the AM2 or cheaper.

Core 2 Duo will likely clock better and give better performance in most every day tasks.

Lots of options, depends what you want, either way the Core2Duo will work the same or cheaper and give you better performance.

Listed 2 of the most popular boards (not neccessarily the best, but very good boards), its all down to budget and preference after that.

£559 all inclusive (p+p, vat) would get this:
