Good morning all. Looking for some advice at the moment.

Currently I have a 350D and I am looking to upgrade the camera in the next few months. Very happy with Canon so looking to stick with them. I have compared the tech specs via the Canon website of the 3 models and find very little if any real differences between them.

I would be looking to go for the 550D rather than spend the extra money on the 600D or the 60D (not too fussed on the pop out screen).

The main use for the camera is usual family pics, portraits, landscape and also looking to try and use it a great deal more since moving to London. One thing I would like to have go at is more night time photography and also stop start motion.

What would you choose and why, I know the 60D has a better build quality than the 550D.

Thank You

The other option is the 50D if you dont need video.

I've been finding it really difficult to decide between the 550D and the 50D. A 550D came up so I decided to go with that. Still considering selling it for a 50D, but after trying the 60D in a high street shop, I really couldnt tell much difference between the 60D and 550D to be honest!

The 550D has the same sensor as the 7D, has video, and is a nice camera. So I think Im just going to get a grip for it and leave it at that tbh!

I did consider the 7D for a Nanosecond but too pricey as I would like to get a lens if poss after the camera. Video is not a must have but a nice to have.

If your really not fussed about video, mights as well pick up a 40D. Can get them for around 350 ish second hand and then can put that money you save towards a new lens, the 60d is a bit of a weird one and it isnt a metal body (where as the 40D is). If I were you I would pick up a 40D and then a nice fast prime for your portrait stuff :D

I really should readjust my statement sorry. I would not make a huge use of the video side of things but will play around with it. Also I feel for sell on value would be beneficial to get one with Video.

The 550D is the cheapest, which allows you to put more money on more important things like glass. It's a very light camera and very comfortable once gripped. More comfortable than my gripped 50D as the 550D is allot lighter.
In terms of IQ the 550D will be about the same as a 600D, 60D and 7D, and slightly better in some respects than a 50D.

Apart from cameras like the 7D and 50D, none of them have features like micro-adjust, which can let you fine tune the auto focus on your lenses to achieve the sharpest possible focus, which for me personally is a big deal as imo there is nothing worse than some slight front or back focus to kill a shot.

I currently use a 50D as my main camera as it has more 'pro' features, and is better overall than my 550D for what I use it for.

If I had to start all over again though, I'd go the Nikon route and get a D7000, as it's a lovely camera that's feature packed, however it is more expensive than a 60D.

I concur.

550D is properly the best option and get some decent glass is always the best route.
I own a 7D and the IQ is almost the same as 550D, 600D, 600D, it is just how you can take the shot that is diffrenet.
the 40D & 50D are bigger semi pro DSLR's and have that more solid feel about them.
However I think the 500D, 550D, and 600D being small are easy on the neck when carrying it around all day.
The wife loves my 7D, yet would not want to carry it, a true girl !

If I had to buy all this kit again, yep I think I would go Nikon. Before the 7D, 600D, 60D came out the AF on canons was second best to Nikons and also the low light performance was not as good.
This may be because the APS-C sensor on the Canon is slighty smaller than the Nikon's APS-C sensor.

I think I was always going for the 550D unless I found a great deal on the 60D...or even and once in a lifetime deal on the 7D (very doubtful).

I think the feel of the 60D does appeal to me as it does feel very sturdy but is it worth the extra outlay just to have that feeling of sturdyiness (is that a word) and the nice display screen on the top of the camera. I would say not.

Not if it means sacrificing good glass.
While the 60D is bigger and heavier (yet has flex), I don't really see that as an advantage over something like a gripped 550D which imo is an ideal size and weight, and also the 60D and 550D are made out of the same plastic. If you want a really rigid body then a 40D/50D or 7D are your best options, but that doesn't really improve IQ, so it's a non-issue to me.
