5600x or 5800x for gaming?

I went for the 5800x since a) found a good deal on one, and b) I expect some of the PS5/XBX console ports will start leveraging the extra cores over the the next months-years. Working great so far in my MSI x570 Gaming, have it running stable at 4.7ghz @ 1.3v.
I went with a 5800x but probably should have gone with a 5600x. I'd expect games in the future to use more cores but it's the age old problem. By the time those start releasing, there'll likely be an even better slate of CPUs to choose from. I used a 2600k and then 6700k well beyond their life cycles. I'm thinking I'll do the same with the 5800x for now.
I don't think the 5600x is that much of an upgrade. You are swapping one 6 core 12 thread cpu for another.
5800x is probably a better investment long term. Eventually 8 cores will be the new standard, and the 5800x will be a very attractive proposition for second hand buyers as it's the pinnacle of the am4 ddr4 socket (in the same way haswell 4790k are stiill sought after by people wanting to max out their old rigs with hyperthreading)

I left mine stock with PBO +200 and all my cores boost just past 5gz get about 75c max.
It's a great chip.

Just throwing my 2 cents out there but I jumped up to the 5800x over the 5600x, I seen the benefits while doing CPU rendering but I think it will be a good couple years before your average big game release to really push the limits of the CPU's capabilities. Would recommend for the sake of future proofing.
Only recently MSFS announced that they are reprogramming the game engine to offload certain aspects to individual threads.

I'd rather get an 11400F over a 5600X if going for just 6 cores the 70% price increase just doesn't justify only a 10% performance increase.
Ignore the 5600X and get either the 5800X which adds longevity as more games will start to leverage those cores or an 11400F if you just want a cheap 6 core for gaming.
