Long story short, used to live in an NTL area 4 years ago (Ellesmere Port), was on a 1mb line back then... Moved to rural wales, and have been stuck on a sucky 56k line ever since (too far from the exchange to get ADSL)... Moving back home, so will be back in a broadband area, although now, it's no longer NTL, its Virgin Media...

Would love to get their top 20mb line (which they offer), but what else would i need to buy to go wireless with 3 pc's... I know nothing about wireless broadband, but have skimmed through this thread for anything relating to NTL/VM...

From what i can gather, i would need a 300Mbps router, PLUS, a 300Mbps wireless pci adapter (for my pc), as i'd love the full 20mb speed over wireless for downloading files, and the other 2 pc's could be fitted with 54Mbps wireless pci adapters, as they'll only be used for email/browsing...

If so, would the D-Link DIR-655 300Mbps Gigabit Edition Wireless Cable/DSL Router and the D-Link DWA-547 300Mbps Wireless Desktop PCI Network Adapter be ok for wireless on an NTL (Virgin Media) 20mb connection?

There's no reason why you'd NEED to have that model, as a 54mbps router can transfer up to 54mpbs, which is more than sufficient to transfer a maximum 20mbps connection.

Of course, for transferring files between PCs etc the extra bandwidth over the network could be handy.

Thanks for the reply... As stated before, i am totally clueless when it comes to wireless networking...

Glad that a 54Mbps router is good enuff, as they are considerably cheaper... :)

good luck trying to get 20mb over wireless.

wire it up baby!

Indeed.

Standard 54mbps equipment will have a very hard time hitting those speeds....wireless has a lot of overheads and the actual throughput will be much lower than your connected speed. By the time the signal has been weakend by a wall or two it will be limiting you.
I would suggest looking at the faster speed wireless networks or maybe the powerline networking stuff which is good.

It all depends on situation. In theory a 54Mbps router can handle it, but with distance etc/interference it may not be. If in doubt go 125Mbps. 300Mbps would just be overkill imo.

Er nope. 54G will rarely do 20 and probably ~10 avg. So best to use something a little faster :p.

I'm using a DG834V2 54Mbps router at home, and I could swear i'm getting a better transfer rate than 2.5MBps sending files WLAN side.

Something to test when I get home I feel! If i'm wrong, i'll certainly hold my hand up.
