Orderd one of these cards yesterday because the xfx one was not in stock so it would be arriving shortly.I have just realised that most of the cards are shipping with only 720 instead of 800 and how to fix this was to update/flash the bios but how would i do this on a dell xps 420? and how would i check if it has 800 prossesors when i plug it in and turn the pc on?

Thanks.

Doesn't the 5750 have 720 stream processors? Download GPU Z to check the stats of the card, although I'd be very surprised if the Vapor x model has fewer Stream processors, as it could be classified as false advertising (selling a 5750 as a 5770)

I just had one from OCUK 3 days ago, mine says 800 stream processors in GPU-Z. So I assume that Sapphire has now corrected the bios and is shipping proper cards out. They stated that the problem only affected a few in the first place, so the chances of getting a dodgy one is quite low.

I picked up a 5770 Vapor-X from OcUK on the 4th January and it still represented the 'bad BIOS' version. At the time, the website was showing 10+ in stock and so one might infer that more users will experience this issue.

I came across the information while reading another site; it hasn't been particularly big news over here. Given the possibility that some buyers may not stay abreast of tech news here or via other forums and hardware sites it would have been nice to see, for example, information made available on the item's eStore page or to have received direct communication from the shop on making a purchase - perhaps in the form of an advisory note which accompanies the product.

Hmm now I am confused I think.. I have a Sapphire 5770 Vapour-X and reading this thread I am not sure if it has 720 processors or 800, since I can't see anything saying 800 in GPU-Z I am think I only have 720.. here is a screeny of GPU-Z if anyone could please tell me if it is as the shop is advertising..

Sorry for being such a n00b but is Processing Cores the same as Shaders? Since I can match most of the information up there against the GPU-Z apart from the Processing Cores. :o

Thank you for your replies guys!

The one the link refers to is a HIS ATI Readon, mind is a Sapphire so can't really compare them can I, it being different manufacturers I mean?

You have to flash the BIOS.

Wouldn't I make the warranty invalid if I flas the BIOS? Or am I confusing this with some other hardware? :o

But reading both your replies I presume my 5770 is not as the OcUK shop advertised in their specifications?

Does this mean the 5750 and 5770 are technically the same but with a diff bios or is it just that Sapphire have messed up?

Sapphire basically made a mistake, which shipped off 5770's with a 5750 BIOS (Hence less shaders)
The card has 800 shaders, but the O/S can only see and use 720.
You won't invalidate the warranty if you reflash it (Provided you ring/email sapphire for instructions and the correct BIOS).

For those that mentioned it, Shader Cores = Processing Cores = CUDA cores.

CUDA is nVidia's new name. Originally they were called Shader cores, but more recently they've changed to Processing cores, since they can often be used as parallel processing to relieve work from the CPU.

That is unfortunate TheSwede, apparently though Sapphire are honouring warranties if the card only shows 720 SP's, even if the flash goes bad. If you are worried about flashing though I would suggest you take it back to where you got it and get it exchanged, or get them to do it. That way at least if it goes bad when flashed you should get a new card straight away. Good luck mate.

Well, it was from OcUK so I guess I can give them a call and see what they say about this? Unless on of their members sees this and gives me other advice that is!

Thanks for all your replies to my somewhat n00bish question guys, much appreciated!

Edit: Just called the shop and was told that since it was idle it would show 720 but would go up to 800 when playing a game? Is this correct?!?

sapphire site has adownload and good instructions to fix this with a flash and states the warrantry will not be affected if you use their files.

Got one few days back and had to flash it & was v easy
