I currently have a Sapphire 512Mb 4870 with a stock fan running at 29%. This is about as high as it can go and still tolerable by me noisewise.

If anyone has owned both these cards, can you elaborate on what the noise levels are of the 5770 in comparison? Any 5770 or anyone in particular will do.

I went from an 8800GT to this 4870 some time ago and was dismayed at the jump in noise level (despite the latter being a dual slot cad).

Is there a particular 5770 that is quiter?

i can only comment on my 4870 with sapphires new cooler attached compared to my 5870 reference cooler.

the 4870 was running at 40% fan and idled at 40ºc + and i could hear it. especially as it got warmer.

With my 5870 it idles at 21% fan and 31ºc and at max goes to 27% fan at 60ºc.
and i can't hear the fan at all. even when i turn my other fans right down i still can't hear it.

I have Asus and a Vapor-x 5770's, both are totally silent as the fan never goes above 49% even maxed out. The temperatures are fantastic on both cards, both topping out around the 60c mark. The main difference is that the VX ram overclocks much further, other than that it's mostly cosmetic and both are silent at all times.
