hello.

im ready to up grade from a 6850.

looking at either a evga or gainward 3 gig 580 or a 680.

iv xfired before so dont want to go back to it found it casued to many poblems.

what do guys think?

never thought about the 79xx. always had ati thought i would try nvidia.

dont have much faith in ati's drivers anymore

Your nearly always going to get some issues with crossfire and SLI setup because of the complications of getting software to write to two cards but for single cards you can't really go wrong.

The hd 7950 3gb can be picked up for around £330 right now but if you want wait until April and see what Nvidia brings out to compete against at this price point it could pay dividends but do avoid the GTX580 it's well over priced for what it is.

What's the rest of your system and what resolution do you game at?

680 might be a bit overkill. A 7950 at just over £300 is probably the better choice for most gamers.

i have an i5 2500k at 4.5
asrock fatality z68 pro gen 3
4 gig corsair xms3 1333
msi 6850
all on a 21" samsung @1980x1080.

im goin to up the monitor to an ips of some kind.

drivers been good so far for my 7970, you can get them for £350 on the bay sometimes. They run at less than 70c so not like a non warranty 2nd hand card is likely to overheat and break. Most of them run at 1100mhz too.
may i just mention that unlike the gtx480s i had this accelerates video nicely to what looks like 60fps in vlc media player.

At current prices go for the 680 over the 580 3GB. The 680 is quite a bit faster up to and including 2560x1600. Behond this it becomes limited by it's 2GB/256bit VRAM. If you anticipate owning a multi-monitor high-res setup, the 7970 and it's 3GB/384bit VRAM will probably be better. For single monitor setups, the 680 edges it.

Probably best to avoid the 580 unless you can find one really cheap.

£380 for the 3GB GTX 580 vs £340 for the 7950 (3GB)
If it was me it would be the 7950.

£450 GTX 680 vs £450 7970....
Stock the GTX 680 is a little better, overclocked (clock for clock) give or take here and there has nothing between them, they are the same, the 7970 has more and faster memory.
It would be the 7970.

I don't think buying a graphics card at launch ever is a good idea. However, I fully understand why people do it. I prefer to wait until the dust (and hopefully the prices) settles down.

I agree with this but as my Daughters boyfriend asked me to build him a comp, I promised him my 560TI (for free I must add).

I didn't expect him to come up with the money so quick, so I was kind of "hurried" into buying the 680. All good though and I know full well you pay a premium for buying on day 1 release.

Given the choice, I would have waited and got the 680 in a months time ish.
