5850 fans spin up intermittently?

Sorry this isn't a very exciting question, but now that my PC isn't crashing and dying on me any more, and everything seems hunky dory, the following bugs me:

My 5850 fan seems to spin up high for a few seconds every so often when idling. After that, it drops back down and carries on as normal for a while.

Seems a bit of a sudden overkill in rpm, and makes me think the computer is about to crash. The fans work fine and obviously spin up as the card gets hot in benchmarks and games. Everything running at stock, default clocks and BIOS. Catalyst 9.11.

Normal?

I had the exact same thing with my 2 previous ATI based cards.

They sounded like a food blender (yes that loud) for a few seconds then would drop back to normal.

Sounds like the temperature it's running at, is just at the point where the fan ramps up. Then it drops below that point when the fan has spun up for a second and the fan slows down again.

I'm on water cooling so I can't tell you how to tweak it, but someone will be along soon to help you out with that.
