5870 -> gtx480 worth it?

I went from a 5870 to a 480 and back again. My 5870 has always performed very well, and although the 480 was a bit faster the noise and heat were too much. The 480 offered no other benefits other than speed so it wasn't worth keeping.

now that is worrying. i've read the reviews, but thought good airflow to its in-take fans should be enough to the dreaded heat issue.

well, saving up for gtx580 was my plan, until this cheap second hand gtx480 came around. also, not sure if gtx580 will still be around come December or next year, considering its low stock.

My 2 pennies worth.

I went from gtx280 sli in 2009, to 5870 xfire and now back to Nvidia with GTX480 sli 3 months ago

Best money spent this year on my pc.

Faster , easier to manage, better drivers (my opinion), easier overclock (again my opinion), better control panel.

I had to watercool them though, noise & heat were an issue, but underwater they are fantastic, very cool and extreamly quiet.:)

I wouldn't unless I new I could cool the beast. I mean look at it:-

It kept throttling too in the test antec sonata case.

Compared to a 5870:-

Looking at 470s it seems a good idea to buy one with a nonstock heatsink. Any chance of finding a pimped up 480?

Everyones case and airflow is different, I have great airflow and my 480 does not break 80c with an 850 core OC and the noise at 70% fan is perfectly fine, but everyone is different as to what is fine and what is not. There are excellent third party cooling solutions out there that can drop temps below 60c gaming and the cards are silent under load.

I have 5870 Vapor-X in a p193, I can only just hear the fan at full load. It doesn't go above 65C. I made the switch to the 5870 from a 9800GT, I didn't realise just how amazing it would be not to hear the fan constantly whirring away.

Considering my 7900GT, 8800GT, and 9800GT all died from overheating after driver updates. ATI have won my loyalty until Nvidia resolve their fundamental issues.

second hand

Just a thought, but what if it has had a heavy OC applied to it? Do you get any kind of warranty with it?

My main concern would be, how long will the card last if it has been heavily OC'ed in the past because of the power/heat issues? (as stated, this is my opinion I am NOT slating the 480 in any way!)

I would keep the 5870, skip this gen altogether (as I am) and wait till next year as no games really make the 5870/480 break a sweat anyway.

had been overclocked to around 830. and it was sitting in tri-SLi setup in seller's machine. apparently it's still got its 5 year warranty with Zotac. not sure if the warranty actually with anything for 2nd hand user.

the thing is that it's so cheap compared to gtx580, i find it hard to resist. 85% of gtx580 for less than 60% of its price....... don't want to regret not buying it. but also don't want to regret buying a card that only lasts 6 months.

Yeah, clearly hot fixes are a bad thing, fix issues in a game by issueing an update? what madness is this!11 :o

No madness at all but why should they need to do this when nvidia rarely do? If you spend time on drivers your product ultimately performs better. hashing out a drive with 4 hot fixes on an single revision is appauling.
