so... what would you get? the 6600 can play the newer stuff with its shader 3 and stuff but i'd have thought the 5950 is faster?

Depends what your doing really...

If its an old game like quake 3 with its high memory bandwidth and texture fillrate the 5950 Ultra will do very well...

But in newer games that use DX8 or 9 its gonna have far lower performance and image quality compared to the 6600GT.

Pretty much same when comparing to the 9800 too infact... with newer drivers the 9800 will be right on the heels of the 6600GT, even beat it in a few tests but it won't stand upto higher settings so well, up the res and throw on the FSAA, etc. and the 6600GT will show its strength...

In this day and age tho you want to be looking at something different graphics card wise tho...

I wouldnt spend more then £20 on it mate. You can get a 7300GT that would beat it in most cases for just under £30 on here iirc. 7600GT for around £55 would trash them both.

I wouldn't touch a 5950 these days and I used to own one and cherish it like it was Jesus...
The 6600 would at least stand a chance of running newer stuff albeit at low details, the 5950. It would choke and would just generally beg for mercy.
5950 + modern DX9 titles = no.
