I've gigabit'd up my entire house... Anything less would make me feel like I've cheating myself out of the absolute best !

Sweet, how much did it cost though and did you do anything in terms of being able to change the plugs/cables if the next standard wants higher bandwidth?

I'm pretty sure Cat6 cables (what you need for gigabit) do actually support faster speeds, it's just the end points that aren't fast enough (the switches, routers, NICs etc), and depending on how many ports you need, each switch will probably cost upwards of about £40 for the basic ones when faster than gigabit becomes a consumer network connection.

Not true you only need CAT5e for gigabit, but i have a need for visual HDMI via ethernet so CAT6 is needed.. Cost is about 20% more to get all the sockets and cable cat 6.

As for cost.. Not a lot..Inc a 16port gigabit Cisco switch, all the wall sockets, cable reel, probably cost around $300.. I live in the USA and it was real easy cos everything is drywalled, so installation is not too bad.. Also ran new RG6 co-ax around the house too. (Cable TV)

Cat5e only works on quite short distances for gigabit, so cat6 is needed for couse wiring etc (a patch cable would be fine as cat5e

Cat5e will suffice for even long runs. I should know, I have them in my house.

Cat5e is rated upto 90 meters or 295feet for gigabit and 100m alike.

Where ever you are getting your technical information from? May I suggest you change it..

I've always had problems in games using wireless. So I swear by wires now.

strange... it's never worked for me. Unless my cables are either badly made cat5e, or actually just cat5 labelled as cat5e...

CAT 5e will do 40 meters of 10Gbit let alone 1 Gbit.

My 30meters of cat5e happily manages gigabit speeds. My 2p would suggest if you can always go for wired (speed is unbelievable in comparison to wireless).
