So , here am I gearing myself up for BF3 and wondering what to upgrade.

All my Clan buddies are telling me upgrade my 60HZ Dell U2410 tp a 120HZ monitor .

Not knowing anything about monitors how would this improve my gameplay ? I am Crossfiring a pair of 5870 on a I5@ 4.0GHZ

Oh I have a budget of £300 to play with .

120Hz Screens are a lot smoother and usually are better quality (compared to older tech) a good 27inch 120Hz Screen is probably £350+ or you could go Eyefinity 3 smaller screen 22inch each maybe. Depends on your preference.

Purely for playing fast paced online games like BF3, a 120Hz monitor like a LG W2363D-PF would be better in most ways - since the fast motion appears smoother (due to the 120Hz refresh rate), there is less ghosting (due to the quick response time panel the 120Hz monitors use) and the input lag is eliminated (since there is little in the way of monitor electronics to introduce lag).

However, you will be trading from a high quality H-IPS panel, wide gamut, 1920x1200 resolution monitor to a TN panel, much narrower colour gamut 1920x1080 resolution monitor. The change in panel type does have a big effect on image quality - since the colour accuracy and viewing angles of a TN panel will be no where near as good as the IPS panel used in the U2410. As for the viewing angles this means that the colours will visibly shift when you move your head a bit off-centre.

Bottom line - if you only play games then it would be a nice upgrade to go for a 120Hz monitor. However, if you do a lot of other things aside from gaming which make good use of the high image quality of your existing monitor then you may want to hold off. Personally, I would keep the U2410, make sure it is set to "game mode" for playing BF3 to keep the input lag down and only consider spending the money if I find big issues with ghosting or input lag when playing.

Yes. Although the pixel response benefits are only truly realised at high frame-rates the mouse position is polled twice as frequently on a 120Hz monitor. This is somewhat independent of frame rate meaning that even at 60Hz you can 'feel' a difference. More subjective impressions on this if you read our S27A750D review. It would help clear some things up. :)

ok cheers fella...

Battlefield isn't fast paced. It's one of the heavier, slower, more strategic multiplayer fpseses and with all the bells and whistles on, even on a monster rig, you'll be lucky to push over 70fps.
On the other hand, 120hz is amazing and you should be getting it anyway :D

Depends what you're doing. Zipping around in some of the nimble vehicles is fast paced. But yeah most of the on-foot action is relatively tame. :p

Would you prefer height adjustment? Matte screen? 24" over 23" or no preference? There are a few models to choose from in your price range. I'm sure you'll received mixed (or in some cases not enough) opinion on all of them.

24 inch please with height adjustment thanks .

I had a feeling you might say that - understandable if you're used to the U2410. :D I believe the current 24 inchers actually have a 23.6" screen - the main model that would fit the bill is the BenQ XL2410T. I haven't used a new revision of this model myself, only an old revision which my feelings were a bit mixed about (partly because I got a duff unit :p). I have received some positive feedback and discussed experiences of the 'new revision' with people including an individual who had used and was fairly unimpressed with the old revision. The colours take a bit of tweaking but the overall performance of the monitor is pretty good. It obviously won't be able to match your U2410 for image quality but responsiveness is excellent on this model (the new revision has massively improves the 'inverse ghosting' artifacts from the old revisions) and the screen is matte with a fully adjustable stand. OcUK currently have this for £284 and I think you will find pretty similar prices elsewhere.
