Which is the processor to go for

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 90nm (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-147-AM)
or
AMD Opteron UP 144 San Diego 1.8GHz 1MB Cache (Socket 939) - Retail (CP-141-AM)
been advice on eailier post about the opteron which i will proberbly go for but would like a few more post before i part with my hard earned cash.

it will be used for surfing, games such as call of duty2, fear, commands strike force etc,

Well the opty 144 generally overclocks very well and has 1mb cache compared to 512k on the 3500+, I assume you'll be overclocking?
 
I would try for as high as possible keeping load temps below 55c. You might want to invest in an arctic cooler freezer pro at the same time though, only £15 with great performance and fairly quiet supposedly.
