Hello, uve probably all heard this arguement before, along with many benchmarks, but i need to decide soonish which to go for.

the 8800gts 640mb (i can overclock myself) or a good 320mb version.

i have a decent set up, but i want to play games on 1680x1050. as well as crysis and other new dx10 games when theyre out. the benchmarks seem to state at huge resolutions ie 1900x1200, the 640mb is better for eye candy etc, but at lower resolutions the 2 types of cards match fairly well in terms of performance.

i can afford both, but i would prefer to save money, so if i went 640mb , it would be a cheaper brand.

most of the benches ive seen are vague at the widescreen resolution of 1680x1050. so i require assistance in choosing really.

Thankyou

IF you have the money then yes.

I do have the money but I downgraded from a 8800 GTX to a 800GTS 320mb version as a stop gap and I have no problems in games at 1650x1080

I get the same 06 score as my stock GTX too :D

I think as a general rule of the thumb. If you have a monitor that supports 1650 X 1050 or more and you wish play in that res with a few eye candis then getting a graphics card with more than 256mb is a good idea. I've got a Sapphire 1950 Pro AGP 512MB and it runs fine on these res.

To answer your question Baker, get the 640mb version. That card will support your TFT more.

you could always buy a 320mb evga and see how it performs, if you want more just pay the difference between it and a 640mb using their step up programme.

Only thing is the difference on their website works out at £70, slightly more than the difference over here

yeah this is the major problem. ive heard great things about the superclocked/xxx 320mb cards, and ive no doubt they will be great at every game at 1680x1050 with dx9, and good with dx10, BUT i do want to futureproof myself slightly, as uni approaches and that means no cash for pc upgrades.

i guess its just down to how much difference 320mb of VGA memory makes at widescreen res. (which is the problem im facing)

and sli is only about 40% improvement on one yeah?

Well to stick with my previous comment, the 320 Superclocked seems to be as fast if not faster than the 640mb model

yeah ive never bought a product that was slightly faster than a previous version, but thats the problem with these cards. they are the same SPEEDS, but 2x the memory.

i suppose i need extensive benchmarks of them performing at 1680x1050, as i dont plan to play games at any less (or any more).

Im now matching easy riders clock! :D

Mines is a non-OC version also!

Poing of View standard clocked version, albeit mines is sporting an HR-03Plus now lol

Had the same choice to make a few weeks back,320 or 640Mb

I went for the BFG 640mb gts in the end & am finding it very good at 1680x1050 with all the eye candy turned on,maybe helps that i have it clocked at 695/2000 :D

Just thought the extra memory on the card would come in handy for upcoming games like Bioshock,Crysis etc

I'm willing to be you won't be disappointed.

Personally I think you'd be stupid not to go for the 640MB version with the difference being just £50.

Lets say you decided to splash out on a new 20" or greater monitor, now you have a card which may well struggle when the details are maxed out.

£50 future proofs you against this. :)
