I see OcUK has the XFX GeForce 6800 GS 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) on promotion for £49.99 (+VAT) - less than half price according to the ad.

I'm in the market for a cheap-yet-worthwile upgrade for my existing AGP card: GeForce3 ti200 to run along with the AMD64 3000+ & 1GB memory in my system.

So

a) Is it a good deal?
b) Spec me some FPS games that would run fine on such a rig.

Thanks in advance! :D

I suppose it's an average okish card. Don't expect to see any new titles running at max, but for £50 you could get really really lucky and find a 7600GT second hand.

Stuff like HL2 would run fine on your PC with that card.

I recommended one of these to a friend at work the other day. An excellent price for this type of AGP card.

He got it, and is very happy with it!

Aslong as you don't go mad with the settings, they will normally play any DX9 title in high quality, 2x AA, 4x AF 1024x768 res with very solid framerates and look good. If you try going beyond 1280x tho or higher levels of fsaa/af you will see the fps dissapear to nothing in short order...

It will play bf2 at full settings
I run at 1600x1200 res with it even.

Does it mention the clock speed and chip in it. I think the agp version can be unlocked

Indeed, the 7600gt isn't even that much better in most benchmarks.

Yes it is.

When clocked the 7600 GT pulls ahead.

All thats needed is coolbits and detect optimal.

20 quid more.

But much faster performance.

Yes, but lets compare apples with apples. If you're clocking the 7600GT, how does it compare when you unlock the 16 pipes on the 6800GS? And then most 6800GS will overclock to at least 400MHz, possibly even 425MHz. The memory on mine won't go above 1200MHz, but even so, it's a good card for £58. And a £20 price increase makes it 40% more expensive.

TBH, id get the 6800GS, and instead of spending £20 extra on a 7600, id spend an extra £35 on the 3700+ SD, assuming hes on 939

It's a stock 350/1000MHz with 12 pipes. The XFX ones unlock to 16 pipes (mine has anyway) so it is pretty decent card. As Easyrider says - with a copy of Coolbits you can easily overclock either card.

6800 GS will play HL2, BF2, CoD, Doom3 all on reasonable settings. I completed Doom 3 on a 6800 GS (unlocked to GT and overclocked) and it was certainly very playable.

The 6800GS is a great buy. However, if you can find a 7600GS with GDDR3 memory it should be a better bet. I have a GS that overclocks to 725/1600 (from 400/800) and it will destroy a 6800Ultra.

and get a terrible fps. i have seen so many people say "i run bf2 on high with a 6600GT" sure you do with a 20-25 fps. also if you play bf2, pm me your username if you want to have a game.

This is AGP were on about remember - the cheapest 7600gt on AGP will be at least £30 more, not £20
I just bought an AGP GS new for under £70. There are several manufacturers who make these cards with GDDR3 memory - which effectively makes them underclocked 7600GT's. Using Coolbits, I overclocked mine far above the stock settings for a 7600GT.

7600GS AGP with DDR2 = 400 GPU / 800 MEM (do not buy this if you inetend to overclock the memory much)
7600GS AGP with GDDR3 = 400 GPU / 1000 MEM
My 7600GS AGP with GDDR3 Overclocked = 725 GPU / 1600 MEM
7600GT AGP = 560 GPU / 1400 MEM

Of course, overclocking is not guarenteed (neither is unlocking pipes) but most GS GDDR3 cards should reach GT levels.
