I have in my posession a Gainward (Golden Sample) 6800GT @ Ultra 256mb, and wondered if its worth changing that for a Gainward 7800GT 512mb. I have seen it selling for £276. Would it be worthwhile doing that?

you on AGP? 512mb is only useful if you're playing at high resolutions ie 1600x1200 and above, apparently.

Yep, im still on AGP, and will not be changing the mobo for PCI-e, I just want a decent 7800 card that will stop me from having to upgrade until next year.

Supposedly there isn't a huge difference between the 6800u and the 7800gs, the gt I'm unsure of but at that price I'd personally be inclined to go PCI-E if you have a 939 cpu that is.

There are plenty of benchmarks comparing the 7800GT to 6800GT, have a look, and if you think you need those extra fps then go for it.

The 7800GS+ is also worth looking at, its a lot of money, but it's essentially a 7800GTX 512MB on AGP.

So if I bought a Gainward Bliss 7800GT 512mb Silent (GX-030-GW) it would be well worth the money?

Funny coincidence, I have actually just upgraded from a Gainward 6800 GT (Golden Sample) to the Bliss 7800GS 512Mb this week.

The 6800 GT ran at ultra (400, 1100mhz), but would also happily sit at 420, 1200mhz.

Tbh, there isn't a huge difference in perfomance - the 7800 GT seems to run 5-9 fps faster than my previous card, but at a higher resolution and with AA etc on. The added bonus is that this card also overclocks well.

I got this card because my old ultra started to struggle a wee bit running CS (everything maxed, no AA filtering etc) with my new widescreen tft (1680x1050). Now CS is really very smooth and thats with AA filtering etc on (2x, 4x).

For the price it seemed a good buy, I wasn't interested in going pci or getting a 7900 GT Agp (more expensive) when DX10 and Vista is around the corner. This will keep me going for a bit, then it will be new build time.

I went from a unlocked/overclocked 6800NU (AGP) to a 7800GT 256Mb (PCIe) and noticed a big differencein games, I can run at higher resolution and with more AA/AF

Some of the speed increase is from going from a 2450Mhz CPU to a 2750Mhz CPU but most of the difference is from the faster videocard.

I say do it if you play your games at 1280*1024 or higher and like AA/AF

I think I will go the Gainward way for the 7800GT model, but I wont be paying the £352 for that 7900GS+, I do like fast graphics but that just seems far too much cash to part with, especially in a years time when everything would have completly changed.
