Going PCI-E and not wanting to spend copious amounts on a GFX card but want a decent performing 512MB card. Stuck between the above two choices though.

12 pipelines + major overclocks on the 6800GS

or

16 pipelines + small overclock on the XL.

Thinking the GS due to it performing pretty much on par/better than a GT once overclocked.

Suggestions?

Why a 512MB card?

The X800XL 512MB is only marginally faster on some games than the 256MB version.
The only reason the 6800GS BLISS 512MB is quicker than any other GS is mainly due to higher clocks, not the extra ram.

If you can stretch extra £30 you would be better of with the X1800XL or the extra £50 the much quicker X1800 XT 256MB.

PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-037-PC) Price: £124.95 (£146.82 Including VAT at 17.5%)

try telling me a 6800gs would be faster than that :p ;)

In SM3.0 it would be :p

You're right there! don't even consider buying an old tech card ;)

Mid-range is where my interest is too. I don't know about the 6800GS Bliss, but i can definitely recommend the bog standard 6800GS (OCUK). Mine does nearly 7K in '05 and over 3.1K in '06...thats air cooled and stock volts.

Off topic: I still remember your excellent 6600GT review, King, mine was a good 'un but i sold it for a damn good price meaning the 6800GS only cost me £30 ;)
