6800gs vs 7800GT

What is the rest of your system like? Will the 7800GT be held back (bottlenecked) by the rest of the system?

I have just moved from a P4 3.2GHz, 1GB RAM and an AGP 6800 (vanilla 12-pipe) to an A64 X2 3800+, Same RAM and a 7800GT 512MB Gainward BLISS (well i've got two of them now, but had just the one for a week).

My 3dmark03 scores were as follows:

13000~ on the P4/1GB/6800
18000~ on the A64/1GB/7800GT
30000~ on the A64/1GB/7800GT SLI

My mate, with the EXACT same setup as me (new PC), except video card (he has a 6800GS)

He gets nearly 14K on 3dmark03.

well its the AMD3700+ @ 2.5 ghz and 1 gb @ 227 (DDR454) but i cant decidd, i moved from x1600xt to a 6800 to a 7800gt to 6800gs, i really dont know.... 7800 is a little bit outa my budget as well....
 
You already had a 7800GT?

Which 7800GT you looking at? And can you re-coup some of the cost by selling your existing card, putting the 7800GT in budget?

The 7800GT is a much faster card, it will last you a lot longer.
 
Have had a 7800 GT and a 6800 GT ( near enought a GS ) and the main difference for me was in FEAR, CoD, CSS(HDR maps) etc. I never realy saw a hugh difference in anything else but i game at 1200/1000 so I was not pushing them

But its not that much better than a 6800 gs, you posted scores from a 6800 12 pipe. Which (apart from being obv 12 pipe instead of 16) will have half the ram (128) and lower clock speeds. So there would be a bigger jump.

But still Id get the 7800.
