Hello, quick question been having over heating problems with gpu 2 on my xfire (6950 clocked to 6970 speeds) setup, and the company i bought from have offered me either 7970 / 6990 / gtx 590 in exchange, which should i take? im an ATI fan boy so the gtx 590 isnt really an option.

any input would be great!

Is the offer for one HD 6950 or both of them?

If it's for one they're being incredibly generous as a HD 7970 costs roughly the same as 2 HD 6950's.

Sorry i should have been more clear, its they have my two 6950's back and i have one of them options, also i can have the 6990 or gtx 590 on friday but i have to wait 3 weeks for the 7970.

do you still get the same xfire problems with one 6990? i hoped that with both gpu's being on one pcb it would get rid of the problems or at least cut them down?

It depends on what you mean by problems.

The HD 6990 uses 2 GPU's in CrossFire the same as your 2 HD 6950's so any issues you have with CrossFire itself working would be exactly the same.

If you can hold out I'd go for the HD 7970.

Overclock it and you're in HD 6990/HD 6950 CrossFire performance territory without any potential CrossFire issues.

Thats what i thought Surveyor ( the 7970 oc would be near 6990) but does the fact the two gpu's are on one pcb not help at all rather than using a ribbon connection?

No. It's just "hard wired" if that makes any sense.

The only thing that helps about having two GPUs on the same card is that AMD work harder to make it work, given that it's their willy waving card.

IE - The 6990 was made to take on the 590 yet at launch due to cackola drivers it didn't. It got better later, but it's still the hottest loudest hardest to keep cool guzzling power muncher there is.

It's not a nice card to live with, it makes the 480 look like a passive card lol.

I suppose i could get it and then see if some one fancys a nice swop for a 7970 card!? :D

if i find it to noisey or hot that is.

The last two of those I saw sell on AVF went for £320 and £310 delivered.

As the Super Mutants in Fallout 3 say when throwing a grenade at you -

HOT POTATO !

Honestly mate, please, heed the advice being given to you.

If you want a dual GPU card then get the 590 as it's quite a nice card tbh. It just doesn't overclock, but it's bloody quick.

Hurm think i might call them and tell them ill wait for the 7970 if it will deffo only be 3weeks and no more than that.
