6950(6970) vs. 480GTX

Yea this is my exact dilema!
Currently running 4850's in cf, i feel these are the weakest part of my i7 rig.
Saying that ive not come accross a game i cant run flawlessly

To spend money now and try offload current cards whilst they still hold "some" value.
Or hang fire another 6 months and see whats on offer then!!!

Everything is pointing towards the 6950 for me. Lower power consumption (I have a 500W psu), quieter at idle, and 10dB quieter under load!

Add in the fact I can go crossfire later (but not SLI), then it seems like a no brainer, really.

I don't think its worth waiting for them, with OcUK selling a 2gb at £215 at the moment. I can't see the 1GBs dropping much below £200 any time soon, plus there are already reports that the 1GB models do not unlock - which makes the 6950 a non contender for me; I'm only interested if it can be flashed and clocked to a 6970.

Such hard decisions - it would be much easier if there was an Overclocked 480 benchmarked somewhere, to see whether its worth the extra £30 over the 6950 to buy one with a better cooler.

Personlly i think the 480 is a better deal sence its only a preorder price and will go up to a atleast £250. Also a lot of known places selling it for £300+.
Is the 480 is around the same speed as a 570? And if overclocked with custom cooler for £30+ then could reach 580 speeds?

I couldnt get my 6950 past 925 Mhz core and 1435 memory no matter how much power i gave it and someone else i know had artifacts on heaven benchmark on his card using the 6970 bios while i didnt so he just used the asus 6950 bios with shader unlock
I just sold my 6950 anyway and postaged it and preordered the 480 sence i think its a great deal for £195 and i wanna give 3d vision ago

See below for 480 at 800 core, bare in mind with extra voltage and custom cooler 900 core could be on the cards.

Oh btw, I should have mentioned that that particular GTX480 was using a Zalman cooler and the voltages were increased as well but even at 800MHz, it would still perform better than a HD6950. And I'm sure others can achieve higher clocks more easily. The one I borrowed wasn't a great overclocker but was still useful for some OC vs OC results.

Cheers for pointing the review out though :)

cuda in my opinion is a complete waste of time unless you like to sit around folding all day, theres no apps that use it well, any that do claim to use it are buggy as hell and are very limited :( 3d vision on the other hand looks pretty cool, although its another 200 odd for a cheap 3d monitor and the glasses.
