7 or 8 Series Card

Hi, iv'e just put together a second PC with some bits i had lying round, trouble is the only card i could get hold of for free was a radeon 7000 (POOR I KNOW). So I'm gonna buy a card for it no more than about £40ish, would i be better getting a Second hand 7800/7900 gt/gtx or a New 8600gt. It'll probly only be used for some older stuff like F.E.A.R and CoD2.

I did used to have a 7800gtx, so know its more than capable, but never used a 8600gt and was wondering would it fair better.

Toms Hardware is good for comparing. I put in a 8800 GT, 7900 GTX, X1900 XT, 8600 GTS and 7600 GT..

So for that budget you will have to go 2nd hand to get something worth while.

After looking at that, i think i'll try get a second hand 7900gt, i don't want to spend too much because i'll prob put my 8800gtx in it when Nvidia pull their fingers out and release something worth buying.

think your mixed up there pal. the 8600gt easily beats the 7600gt in everything and in shader intensive games the 8600gt gains a massive lead over the 7600gt.

8600gt is a very underrated card, a ddr3 variant gives very good value for money at its 40 quid pricepoint.

also for the op if your given a radeon 7000 im going to assume your on agp, and if thats the case you going to be hard pressed to find a 8600gt for agp sockets.

The Radeon 7000 i've been given is running on old fashioned PCI, the motherboard i'm using A8NE-FM Has PCI-e so that leaves me with a better choice.

on pci-e you have a lot of option, if you increase your budget to 70 quid you open up possibilities for such as 9600gso, 8800gs, possibly older 320mb 8800gts. good cards which will really allow you to have some decent gaming performance in all games once you play with the settings some.

but if 40 quid is all you can spend then 8600gt is probably your best bet brand new.
