The best thing about 70s TV shows was the casual yet arguably unintended racism and sexism.

Its funny really how it was comparatively so short a time ago and yet so different in what you could say. I remember reading an article not long ago from the BBC, in which they said that they would never again show the famous German dont mention the war , episode of Fawlty Towers, because it would cause offense. I think thats a great shame as its one of the all time classic comedy episodes from uk tv

I really believe that Porridge is one of the best comedy series ever made. Specifically the "A Night In" episode from the first series. Only 18 episodes plus two Christmas specials and a film were made but that was just the right amount. Fantastic.

The 70's seemed to me to have more iconic american cop shows than the bland stuff we have now. Starsky & Hutch, Kojack, Streets of San Francisco, Columbo, Cannon, Hawaii Five-O, Ironside etc. Now its just wall to wall CSI.

Don't forget the pilot "Prisoner & Escort" as well. :) Ronnie Barker at his absolute best. Also there is the short lived "Going Straight" as well.

Such a shame RB died so young, he had some real talent.

For me though nothing can touch Dads Army. It was never quite the same after James Beck passed though (mid way through series 6).

Most of my DVD / NAS catalogue is 70/80's classic british comedy. My wife loves them as well.

Far better than a lot of the the trash on today.

(For context I am 25).

The 70s gave rise to many classic shows, and rarely have they been bettered. Sure some of them have aged badly, but in my opinion, classics like Rumpole Of The Bailey, will never be equalled.

Battlestar started in the 70's... least we forget the 80's version.:)
