hey all,

i currently have a 3500+ 939 2gig ddr and a 8800GTS i upgraded from a x800xl and my playback is still okay but it skips now and again as if its struggling on 720p and 1080p content. Im going to be turning this pc into a HTPC so i was wondering would i notice upgrading the CPU to a better chip.

Also what would you recommend dont really want to spend that much so im thinking of upgrading the CPU. a 4400+ or FX-60 what would be the best solution. Looking for minimal cost upgrade :D

Cheers

what would be the best cost wise for my needs, im going to have 720p and 1080p video as the most intensive thing, no games etc just video playback as its goign to be a HTPC

Can pickup 2nd hand x2 3800 for about £50,they are only £58 new though now from OcUK. I would go for something with more cache though which is why i mentioned the Opty's a 165 or 170 would be a bit more expensive but are generally cooler running.

Nvidia 6000/7000/8000 cards have Purevideo and some have Purevideo2 (8500/8600/possibly Rev3 Core Ultra), so you should not need a power CPU, I ran them on AMD Barton Mobile clocked from 2GiG upto 2.8GiG and 400ddrFSB upto 550ddrFSB with low CPU % use, but I did run the Nvidia Purevideo Decoder and hotfixes for WMP10, plus newer Nvidia drivers, WMP11 in XP lacks these fixes as MS want you to use Vista so WMP11 contains them.

Opy's 170 seem to be around 70£ new, rekon thats the best way? what does a 3500+ retail go for never overclocked, packaged in origional packaging, £££?

check your cpu usage when playing back hd content as it could be your hdd which is causing the skips, like the speed or bad sectors.

if its at 100% then it is very likely that you need to upgrade, but ive had lesser cpu's that run 720p content fine without a hitch.

even a 3500 should be fine for 1080p

I had a 3700+, with higher CPU intensive 1080p codecs CPU was pratically maxxed out, so I would consider a dual core CPU just to be safe.

what are you trying to play and what are you using to play it? your system i believe should handle 1080p fine if the gpu is doing the decoding. That means you'll have to use a player that supports hardware decoding like powerdvd 7 ultra or something similar.

I think if you just got yourself a 8600, then your playback issues would be resolved, no need to get a new CPU.

I think the movie player has to detect & use videocard acceleration, so perhaps MP+FFDSHOW with a 8600 won't make a difference? Perhaps have to use Power DVD HD?

The 8800 have Purevideo not Purevideo2 purely because it came out well before Purevideo2 was ready, the 8000Ultra as a Rev3 core may have Purevideo2, look at chart and see what it does or does not do, it Purevideo covers mpeg2/WMV and later added some aspects of H264 since the 6000/7000 series through updates to the Purevideo Decoder and drivers.

http://www.nvidia.com/docs/CP/11036/PureVideo_Product_Comparison.pdf

It has nothing to do with FFDshow, I found it lowered CPU use in Nero Showtime/WMP/VLC (all I used at time gave up on PowerDVD at 6.0),m used to be able to see differnce in CPU use by unchecking box in drivers settings as in the Purevideo settings its only for mpeg2 the console will appear, but newer drivers on my 8800Ultra dontlet me uncheck box its perm on.
