75 Yr old father possibly scammed, help please!

What are you on about? Reread my original post, last sentence in particular.
I was talking about "if" the OPs relative wasn't very computer literate, and the scammer on about problems with his windows system, which would be impossible if he was on a different OS.
Leave the Windows vs Linux debate for another thread.

Linux offers obscurity, nothing else, whilst introducing similar threats and a foreign environment.

The "just use Linux" recommendation never seems to be well thought out.

Revival

I've just had the Microsoft scam with Asian Dave.
I kept him on the phone for ages while trying to look for a recorder on my phone but I hadn't got one.
Anyway, when I eventually pretended to go to a web page I announced that there were two men having sex on my screen and Asian Dave must have twigged and said "I rang you because you are a gay and I don't talk to gays" :D
"But I've been married for 52 years to my wife Ethel, I can assure you I'm not a gay".
"You are a gay" and he put the phone down.

I can't believe I didn't have a recorder on my phone, I have now though.

What is weird he had me pressing Windows Key - R but had me typing www.support. (something), why not just ask me to open IE or Firefox?

My dad (age 77) has been told by me to hang up on anyone who claims to be from Microsoft, after telling them he talks to me about a problem with his PC.

Me- I ask them who Microsoft is, because there are only imac's in my house (which is a lie), so **** off!

Buy your father a Chromebox and make sure that any DD agreements are cancelled, and credit card charges disputed.

Edit: Hey look a thread revival. But still, no reason for people who just use web apps all day to be burdened with a Windows machine. I bought my mother a Chromebox and a Cloud Print enabled printer and haven't had a single request for computer help in the past two years.
