Do these cards have two stages of operating? I just remember reading about some cards having 2D and 3D stages. I wonder because I've just installed this card, after having a ti4200, and performance is barely any different. So I wondered if it might be working on a slower basis or something. Is there a way of checking?

Also, the temp never seems to climb much above 42, which I suppose is a good thing, but again, this is what has made me wonder if it is firing on all cylinders.

They do have 2d clocks and 3d clocks, this is true. They are often default set to the same value.

When you say that it isn't much faster than your ti4200 (which was a great card, I had one of those leadtek ones with the massive heatsink) in what regard isn't it much faster? 3d mark (I'd laugh if it was that) or just general windows stuff. If it is the latter then memory, cpu and hard disk speed would be more of a limiting factor. In windows the GPU doesn't need to get out of bed :D

Yeah you have to be more specific about what you are actually using the card for ie what games/software.

That 7600 GT should be considerably faster, by a large SCALE!! :p

2D apps will show no difference whatsoever, only benefitting from the amount of V-RAM if anything.

3D apps are entirely dependent on the instruction set the GPUs are using, i.e. what games you're playing. If you are playing Doom2 or Quake, then there will be very little difference.

Just try booting up Half Life2 with full textures/shading and whack on some AA/AF. That will show you why you've paid £140 for a new graphics card.

I was just running netkar pro, and the frames are virtually identical. I have just tried Hitman 2 and the fps was though the roof :) Something like 300!

I think netkar pro may be CPU limited, although I'm on a XP 3200, which is not fast by todays standards, but still keeps up usually.

I'm DL'in 3d mark 05 right now, as I think from what I've seen of others with a similar spec, I should get around 5000+ from that. If I don't then I know there's a problem. Thanks folks :)

Could anyone recommend an app for overclocking? As it isn't actually there in the control panel.

I don't actually intend to do much overclocking, but I would like to reconfirm the clock speeds (powerstrip says memory on this card is 700mz)

download the coolbits registry file, the overclocking will then show up in the control panel :)

Thankyou :)

I've done that, works a charm. I am concerned though that the memory reads as 700, when this card should be 1400. Is this correct?

Try some new games with all the visual splendor ON! and you'll see why it was a good upgrade ;)

Yep, netkar pro is a serious simulation so it uses tons of cpu cycles, but as you'll see from the graphics, it doesn't stretch your video card at all.

about right the 7600GT on AGP should get between 5500 and 5800.

I get 5545 with my 6800 (GTS which is a PCI-x BR2'd to AGP card) at stock speeds and the 7600GT should be slightly faster.

sounds about spot on, i get 7358 with mine, but its pci-e, clocked to hell (675/1700) and on a 4ghz 805
