I've lucked into getting my hands on an XFX 7600GT. I currently have a Sapphire X800 GTO2 in my main machine that clocks to 520core / 590ram (just short of X850 XTPE speeds) with no problem. The question is, should I just sell on the 7600GT (perhaps to fund an X2 3800+) or is it going to be faster than my GTO2?

How many 3dmarks05 does your GTO2 get, with the GT you can expect about 6500-7000 at stock.

Yeah it doesn't eat it for breakfast, but it is a faster card with better support for future games.

^ don't forget your GTO2 is effectively an X850XT. If you had it at stock it would be a different story ;)

Why you compairing a old dx9b / p.s 2.0 ATI to a newer Nvidia with dx9c / p.s 3.0 and all that goes with it < there is your answer if you game on what card to get, X800/850's regardless of how many FPS they can get in games dont cut it IMO esp since dx9c came out with XP2 for XP around Oct 2004.

I 'upgraded' from an X800XTPE to a 7600GT this week and they perform very alike. 3D Mark 05' saw the 7600GT score 6789 over 6500~ over the X800XTPE. For future proofing sake the 7600GT is the better option. Going to go SLI and water cooling with them soon so will update on performance.

They only may perform alike in FPS, not what effects you can see on your screen, and thats a fact. Dx9b and all that goes with it is nearly 3 years old now, but if you dont care about games it wont bother you. :)

Added to fact 3dmark is nothing but big e-penis, it dont have much input to real life use, we all use it though, but again run 2006 and see as its for dx9c cards.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like it's going to be a hard decision.

I score about 6500 in 3d mark with the GTO, so at stock it doesn't sound like the 7600 will be dramatically faster. I'm not a huge game player any more anyway - a dabble with fear every now and again, or whatever else takes my fancy for a day or two :) The 7600 is of course more future proof .... but is it enough to justify the £70 or so difference in what I'd get by selling them?

Does anyone know how well the 7600s are clocking? That might be a deciding factor.

They do perform about the same, but the GT will eat less power and cause less heat.

Also, I think that it performs better than my old GTO2 and X850 XTPE did in games, rather than just 3d mark.

I should expect you should get 7500 minimum after clocking a 7600gt - unless your very very unlucky.
They wont get quite that high I don't think, mine bottles out at around 7200 with the CPU clocked to 2.4ghz.

Also, you have to remember the 05 score are all at 1024x768, so this is only measuring the brute force of the card, add some AA and AF and I think the GT will look better than the GTO2 in terms of frames.

if you are buying new, get the 7600gt. similar performace, better support. If you already have a gto2, dont even bother. not worth it. If you HAVE both, sell the gto2.

That's coming form a gto2 owner who get's ~68xx in 3dmark2005.

james.miller has it in a nutshell

If you have the GTO2 @ X850XTPE speeds then it's not worth the upgrade as they offer pretty much identical performance

If you have both, sell the GTO2 and go for the newer 7600GT

If you have neither and are buying new, go for the 7600GT

EDIT: SM3 BTW doesn't offer a huge boost in image quality over SM2 it's just faster

If you were buying new then go for the 7600GT without question

If you already have the X800GTO2@X850XTPE then it isn't worth buying the 7600GT as an upgrade
