what temps should a 7800gtx run at load ?
just bought the new c&c 3 and after 10 minutes of play the temps have risen from 78 to 105 and black lines start appearing down the screen going to an eventual game freeze but the mouse moves and windows still runs (can still here xfire beeping away ) the only solution is a reset
every other game runs fine CS reaches 98 degrees and runs fine
been on the EA forums and although everyone seems to have problems none are like mine ..... all drivers are up to date and running a 4400x2 2gb geil ddr400 and a8nsli  the system has otherwise been totally stable with everything

Any temp over 100C should really raise some alarm, although I dont have a 7800GTX a quick google shows that the average 7800GTX load temp is around 75C-80C.

Is your heatsink clogged with dust? A quick clean can drastically reduce temperatures and also you might want to consider reapplying the thermal compound with better quality stuff like AS5. If all else fails you can always replace the stock HSF with an aftermarket one.

thanks i've just added 4 fans and left side off idle has gone from 78 to 64, tried again and it went up to 105  no other game does this

Have you tried stress testing your GPU outside games such as the use of ATItool or similar? 105C is definately too high.

Also make sure your heatsink is clean and dustfree as if its clogged up, not even all the airflow in the world can help you as the dust is stopping the heat from dissappating properly. I used to have a 6800GT and it always used to get clogged up with dust increasing idle and load temp by a good 10-20C, meaning running any half decent 3D game will crash my system.

just took the hsf off its a real big fella but the fins are tight and it has a top on it so its quite easy to get clogged up , took it out to the shed and put the compressor on it lol i think i woke the neighbours up
errrr idle is now 45 degrees my lad has just started on c&c 3 we will see in about 10 mins if its worked or not

yep we've cracked it :) running at top settings at 77 degrees , the lad just happened to mention now it had done it to him the other day on CS as well  , so just 2 weeks of school holidays then i might get to have a go ;)
