Hi all,

I am looking to buy a nvidia 7800gtx in the near future but have a question.

Is it worth waiting for the new nvidia card to come out first? basically for the price drop in the 7800 range, or wont there be a bigger enough drop in price drop to justify waiting?

Or do you think it would be worth saving the extra ££ for the new nvidia card?

Thanx in advance :)

Hi there

There will be no 7800 price drops I am afraid. The stocks that are left now are the last......

there shouldl be price drops unless nvidia are absolute idiots. i would wait mate and if these are the last of them and they dont drop in price just get a x1800 xt its a great card and its dert cheap £234 compared to the gtx wich is £279 (rip off) infact why dont you just but the x1800xt i would

NVIDIA's clearly aint idiots, there selling 1000's of cards at high margin levels and demand is still greater than they can supply, so under those circumstances they won't drop prices......

I'm wishing i'd waited for the 7900GTX, now i'm stuck with my 7800GTX, ho hum, you live and learn... Not all bad, as its still a GREAT card... ;)

As said allready, the X1800XT at present is cheaper & also faster than the 7800GTX. It really is the better buy. :)

This is my point who and why would someone buy a card that is slower and more expensive (apart from die hard nv fanboys). x1800 all the way imo its faster, has better tech and the iq is better, what more can i say for the price you just cant beat it

So yet again, anyone with the idea of upgrading later on for extra performance via SLi is going to have a hard time?

I'd just wait for the new 7900's to come out, it's only a few weeks away. Nobody knows for sure how they will be priced.

so they are stopping making 7800 GT's then?

I was going to get another and run a sli config.

Can some one please clarify this.

It looks like we will be seeing a 7900GT that maybe similiarly specced to the 7800GTX. However, it being produced on 90nm process should allow for nvidia to make more profit out of them, so I would reckon they would EOL the GT, and the 7800GTX.

If they discontinue the 7800GT Nvidia will have to replace it with an equivalently priced card so they can compete in all areas of the market. If the 7800GT replacement beats the X1800xl then ATI will be forced to lower their prices. It's always best to wait; manufacturers/shops will always encourage you to buy. I WAS going to upgrade in April, but with AM2 round the corner it makes sense for me to wait until then and either buy into (what will be) very cheap Socket 939 technology or low end AM2 technology. Either way, I'll be getting a graphics card that will be cheaper or more highly specified than what I can buy right now.
My rule of thumb, upgrade only when you HAVE to, and then buy second generation technology or lower end first generation tech. - that way you spend approx. £500 for a rig that will last you 2-4 years (2 years graphics card; 4 years mobo.). RAM you can add anytime, and you should be able to get at least one CPU upgrade from your mobo.
Of course it's never a good time to upgrade (something is always around the corner), but sometimes are worse than others to upgrade!

so all this SLI is nothing but nonsense then?

I mean wasn't the idea to get a card for sli the ability to upgrade in the future.

People with 6800 gts were stung because nvidia stopped making them so people who needed a boost had to but a new card.

Now they might not carry on making 7800 GT's so what is the point in sli?

I mean I have a 7800 Gt and was thinking of upgrading to another one when the time was right.

Now it maybe the fact that I cant just pop another 7800 Gt because they dont make them by the time I want to go sli.

so whats the point in sli?

If the card that we get to eventually go sli are not around.

Looks like you might have to go second hand - plenty available if you look around.

sorry still asleep whats EOL? :o

Sorry, i like my TLAs :p

EOL = End of Life.

The thing about SLi if your going to go the upgrade is that there is a possibility, when you choose to upgrade, that the second card that you will be upgrading won't be produced anymore and you will have to look to second hand cards. This usually happens if you don't buy another card within 6months or so, because about every 6 months there are product refreshes and some cards from the previous generation are discontinued.

What's the 7900GTX coming in at on price... any idea's?

I can see further proce drops in the mid and low end, but not the 7800's just yet. There exploiting high margin from this series right now.

Hi,

Now that they are about the same price, which do members think is the best buy out of the GeForce 7800GT and the Radeon X1800 XL (cheaper than a GT!)?

Thanks in advance.
