7800GTX to 7900GTX with Zalman chipset cooler

7900GTX or X1900XT with Zalman chipset cooler

Hi guys!

I have an Asus A8N-E with a Zalman NB47 chipset cooler. I would to know whether the new 7900GTX with the larger cooler fits on this configuration. Right now the 7800GTX DOES fit without any problems, but it also has a smaller heatsink. Has anyone tried the new VGA on this configuration?

Well i can definately say that an arctic cooling 5 rev.3 for my 7800gt made me have to revert back to stock chipset heatsink. So i presume that the bigger stock cooler on 7900gtx will have the same effect .

Of course you could purchase a vf900 gpu cooler. Will kill to birds with one stone. Lower core temp so hence better overclocking potential + you can use your zalman passive heatsink for the chipset.

One more question: Right now I have the pure 7800GTX 256MB. I can sell it for 350E and get a 7900GTX for 500E. Do you think it would be worth the money?
Should I better keep the money and change the card later?

If your stuggling to play at decent FPS/detail settings and res then yes otherwise no

No it wont as I used to have the same motherboard as you and the Arctic Coolers which are of similar size do not fit.

However you can fit a Zalman vf700 on the card but you will have to bend a few of the nb heatsink fins to fit.

In the end I bought the Gigabyte nforce 4 board with a fanless design to go with my new 7900gtx.

What do you think of the ATI X1900XT. I saw on photos that the cooler of this card is smaller and does not take up the whole area of the card. I think this cooler does not intervene with the Zalman chipset cooler. What do you think?
