7850 7870 & 7950 talk to me!

I think you are better off upgrading your CPU etc first, and get that over clocked to a stable state, then look at GPU's afterwards.

+1, the cpu will probably be in your system longer than any gpu.

If your stuck for cash after getting the best cpu you can afford, get the 7850, if your lucky, it will push out close on stock 7950 performance.

Outwith BF3, I very much doubt you'll notice much difference@1080p in gaming.

On the subject of overclocking, I very much doubt the TF is going to clock 50MHz more than any other 7950, it all falls down on how oc'able each chip is, not what AIB's do with the board, the Lightnings are evidence enough of that.

First of all, forget the 7870. It is a great card (I currently have one), but it is too close the 7950 in terms of price and too close to the 7850 in terms of perfromance.

Out of the 7850 and 7950, you need to ask yourself whether you will really notice the extra power of the 7950 at your native resolution. I think that within most games, you will not notice any difference, so my preference would lean heavily towards the much cheaper 7850. 7850's are also easier and more fun to overclock, with most reaching ~1200MHz or more. 7950's are much more picky when it comes to overclocking.

If your monitor was higher resolution (above 1920x1200), I would suggest the 7950, otherwise opt for the 7850 and spend the savings elsewhere. 7850 = best price/performance gaming card currently available.

Yes the Msi has the 7970 pcb well mine did (had two both came with 7970 pcb) didn't think it ran particularly cool tbh and was loud after 60 percent fan and got extremely loud after about 80.

Also from every review I have read the his cooler is quieter and cools better maintaining lower temps it also vents the hot air from the card out the back of the pc rather than into the case.

......trouble with that is Im going to have the CPU, MOBO, PSU, aftermarket cooler just sitting there unusable till I have the GPU.

Where as i can just slot the GPU in my current rig, get a significant FPS boost while I shop around for supadoopa deals on the other parts.....no cash tied up in what I cant even use.

(feel free to point out floors in my logic, Im far from savvy)

Do you not still have the GTX260 in your sig that you could put into the new Cpu, Mobo, PSU?

Yes, but Im still having a hard time working out why getting the platform upgrade first, over the GPU is the way to go?

I suppose because they think your CPU etc will bottleneck a 7950? Which is probably correct.

As for the choice of the three cards, they're all very good, but the 7870 is normally at a slightly worse price point in terms of price vs performance, compared to the other two.

Appreciate the bottleneck issue, But......what's going to give me better gaming in that limbo cross over week:

i5 with gtx 260

or

AMD Phenom x4 9950 with 7950

Twice on Sunday!!!!!

Im sold!

Yes, it is only a week, but for some people in my boat, it could be longer......so for me FPS is what I needed in this Judgment of Solomon..... :)
