7900 GT 256mb or X1800 XT 256mb?

Which one and why?

Which is "The Best". Come on guys, i want a new card and these are two that fit my budget. Can't afford anymore so lets see which one comes out on top with you guys.

X1800XT definatly, 7900GT is essentially a 7800GTX 256 which is slower than a X1800XT.
The 7900GT can be volt modded and overclock like mad, so it does deserve its props. I usually suggest the 7900GT to overclockers, and the X1800XT 256MB to people who a.) want raw power, b.) want to save money, and c.) want HDR+AA. :)

7900 uses less power and is a cooler card =p
nvidia fanboi 4life!
I fitted a Zalman VF900-Cu to my X1800XT today, and I think that anyone who doesn't is mad (unless they are using the stock cooler on 100% speed for benchmarking/overclocking purposes.)

X1800XT does overclock well too of course and volt modding I assume required some soldering or related skills.

I actually use a X1800XT on stock cooling and don't find it particularly warm or noisy. My PC being pretty quiet overall (PC7, 3800+ on stock cooling, twin 120mm ambers in case, X1800XT on stock).

any card can be volt modded... it isnt a special characteristic of the 7900GT. The X1800XT, in fact, is better in that regard as it can be adjusted via software.

So far the X1800 XT is in the lead. I am not going to volt mod as i don't want to destroy a card! Might be easy for some. All i want is the best card out of the 2. It needs to be able to clock well too (without volt modding). It also has to be able to play all games that are out now and any that may be coming out shortly.

Which card gives you the best 'eye candy' too?

I think that the advantage with the 7900gt is that, with the volt mod, it overclocks a lot; far further than the X1800XT goes. Without having used a X1800XT (other than at stock) I can’t say for certain what they are capable of, but I’ve not heard of anyone getting gaming stable speeds equal to or surpassing an X1900 on air. The 7900gt gets to those speeds with comparative ease, even with just the 1.4v mod. With the 1.55v mod 7900gtx XXX speeds are attainable (though that is about the limit on air unless you want to ruin your card with the extreme volt and memory mods).

If the 512meg 7900gts can be modded in the same way, then I’d recommend them as the best card on the market for an enthusiast. With those cherry picked cores and extra Vram they’ll probably rocket past any single card set-up.

i had a connect3d x1800xt although i had the 512mb card i switched to the 7900gt and the clocks in my sig speak for themselves and i haven't yet pushed it, the clocks in my sig are just on stock cooling, stock volts and only using coolbits (which doesn't oc as far)! temps on the card are 40-43 idle and around 50-55 load, the load temps on this card are lower than the idle temps were on my x1800xt!

for me 7900gt > x1800xt

note i also found the x1800xt to be buggy in games

Best out of the box speed - X1800XT
Best potential performace non-modded - Not much in it.
Best eye Candy - X1800XT without a doubt.
Games Support - Only know of one game with an issue with X1800 - B&W2 due to a bug in their code, may well be patched, definatly down to be fixed in a patch - otherwise a draw. Even without the patch it plays fine, just at a noticeably slower frame rate than it should.

At stock speeds the X1800XT is the better choice. If the 512 version of the 7900gt is within your range though i'd be very tempted by that instead .......

....but then again if you've gone as far as that then the it's only another short way to a X1900XT.

Psh..just go with a X1800XT256. They are the best card for the price at the moment if you're not into volt modding.

Well, swaying towards the 7900 GT 256mb now! Looks like a nice little card. I am going to have to sell my 7800 GT anyway so i'll have a good bit to put towards the new card.

^ not entirely true i have seen 7900 gt's in stock at other e-tailers for £199 inv vat and free delivery! shop around

Yeah i know i was on about here though as i thought thats where he was looking, it does pay to shop around. ;)

Heh... it's up to you. I'm not going to be biased about getting a 7900GT. ;) But shop around and you can get these cards dirt cheap. Mine is currently overclocked to 630MHz/1800MHz - could probably lift the core a bit more and still be gaming stable. The volt mod requires no soldering skills - just a steady hand to draw a conductive line. :)

Performance wise - there's not much in it. If we're comparing stock speeds - then the X1800XT is bound to shine - but we're on an overclocker's forum and both cards can overclock. The 7900GT can do 7900GTX speeds easily. X1800 has it's HDR+AA too. ;)
