Basically I want to run BF2142 with 8xS and at the moment the 7900 GTO oC'ed to GTX speeds isn't getting anywhere near 30FPS with the following settings (more like 20FPS average and only in single player):

Antialiasing Settings: 8xS
Anisotropic Filtering: 16x
Image Settings: Quality
Vertical Sync: ON
Force Mipmaps: Trilinear
Trilinear Optimization: OFF
Anisotropic Mip Filter Optimization: OFF
Anisotropic Sample Optimization: OFF
Gamma Correct Antialiasing: ON
Transparency Antialiasing: SS ON
Triple Buffering: ON w/ VSync
Negative LOD Bias: CLAMP

So, do you think two 7900GTO's in SLi will bee able to hold 30+FPS with the aforementioned settings, or will I need to go one step further with an 8800GTS, possibly GTX?

Thoughts please.

Depends what is the rest of your system, TBH. How much memory, what CPU, etc. I'd recommend a GTS/GTX, but when we've ruled out a slow CPU or only 1GB of RAM.

you havent said what resolution mate,
Oops, my bad. Tis all in there I believe, runnin' 1680x1050.

Basically I have three forseeable options:

1.) 7900GTO > 7900GTO SLI

2.) 7900GTO > 8800 GTS

3.) AMD 64 SETUP > C2D SETUP

I only really have the money for one upgrade.

A64 > C2D Setup tbh.

I got a HUGE increase going from my 3000+ SC A64 with 2GB DDR to my Conroe with DDR2 (2Gb) on Battlefield 2142.
Since getting the C2D setup can play it with all settings Maxed with 4x AA.
(Couldn't handle it without stuttering on my A64)
Not tried 8xS can give it a try later if you want though.
Don't forget also a C2D setup won't just increase games and is a tad futureproof.

Yeah mate, that'd be stellar!

Are you using the same nVidia settings as I mentioned above bar AA?

I just tried it and the FPS was great, I didn't run Fraps ain't got it installed atm but it was definately above 30 constantly, was very smooth without any hiccups in FPS at all even with all explosives going on ;) I was using these settings:

8xS AA
All maxed out on BF2142
1280x1024 res (BF won't allow my native WS res)
High Quality IQ in NV Drivers
Supersampling
680 Core and 800 Memory on the GTO.

Awesome! Well I guess it's time to bite the bullet then. 6300/DS3/2GB PC6400 here I come. :D

I had the same problem but some kind soul pointed me in the direction of this

Note the addition of the +szx and +szy commands which respectively set the width and height of the custom resolution to be used. Substitute other values for other resolutions (e.g. +szx 1900 +szy 1200).

which comes from this page

I hope this helps

I have pretty much the same system as you and play at the same resolution with highest settings, but my framerate in BF2142 is always smooth and fast. Thats with a 7900GT.. although i've just noticed you have v-sync on as well as triple buffering (is that on by default?).

No, all the aforementioned settings are forced in the nVidia control panel under Global settings.

I can't quite understand how you are getting smooth framerates with a 7900 GT with 8xS AA and all the above settings I use (bar V Sync & Triple Bufferin') using a 1680x1050 resolution. Do you have a Intel C2D system? If not, please share your secret. :D

Hey i have a 7900 GTO and play at 1440 x 900. Just checked out 2142 with your settingas and am getting a pretty much constant 30fps but with v-sync off it goes upto about 40. Your the next res up so the frames sound about right.

I know in bf2 a core 2 rig really benefits after an upgrade my friend was getting a constant 100fps with an x1900xtx. So I imagine you will see a frame increase in 2142 as it uses the same engine. On the other hand games now care a lot about the graphics card and an 8000 would handle those settings well.

Weird, i got a 7900gto with A64 3200, with forced AA/AT with max res and settings i can get in game and i get around 35 fps avg to 40-45 at best in single player, though i did only have it at 4x AA with more fps and was happy with the result lol
