7900 GTX sli anyone doing it?

There's some benchmarks here, if you're interested. It'll definitely boost your maximum and average FPS by a lot, but unfortunately neither SLi or Crossfire do a lot for the minimum FPS, as it still drops into the 30's and below.

What processor have you got? And what res. do you game at? You might find you hit a CPU bottleneck with that much graphics power :(

I feel I am cpu bottlenecked in Oblivion outdoors with my system. It seems like more and more that a dual-cored cpu is the ideal for SLI.

The spec of my pc is in my sig.
Opty dual core running at fx62 speeds :D
What res are you running at? If you're 1280x1024 or smaller there's absolutely no point, even with something with similar res to the Dell 2005 will be hard to justify 7900GTX SLi.

I'm sorry but how ridiculous is this game? Going below 30Fps even with TWO 7900GTX? Madness, utter madness. Is it really that graphically demanding or poor optimization? (Suspect a lil of both). I'm interested in this game but not if my system can't play it and its hardly a bad system (A64 3800+, 1GB ram, X850XT PE).

It's incredibly detailed... very realistic textures and massive draw distances. Good physics too.

It's not a game that needs massive framerates to be honest, though I can't say that mine have ever dropped a large amount, apart from when I'm stepping out into the open world right as Windows OneCare decides it want's to run a tuneup... but even then it's only a drop for a second or so :)

im thinking about buying another, i usually play at 1600x1200 but my dell 24" does 1920x1200.
my cpu is 4800 x2 so i should be ok.
thing is, i can play fear at 1600x1200 with really good settings and its smooth as a baby's bottom !
So im not sure that it would be worth it !

Joke aye?

How is the equivalent of an FX-62 too slow for SLI?

2x7900 gtx's cant get the data quick enough at low res. the gfx cards are hardly doing anything, they wait on the cpu all the time.

Check 05 benchies for proof. See massive increases in score as you overclock the cpu.

Just think of quad sli  absolutly useless as the cpu cant harness that power unless you game at 2000x1400.

no joke.

Tom

EDIT: Graphics card technology has been ramped up so far in the last few years and cpus have what? a couple of hundred megahertz. Dual cores i grant you but even then the games dont use it.
Im running an fx67 (ish) btw

It depends mostly on which settings you use, really. The average and maximum FPS will vary depending on the power of your card, but the minimum FPS for pretty much all cards is the same (high 20's and low 30's) unless you're using too high settings or an old card.

I used to play it on a GTO² in 1280x960 with medium settings or so, it ran fine. Runs much better on my X1800XT, of course.

I generally agree with you although the op will still see benefits with SLI. I have and I'm running a 'paltry' FX-53 equivalent. He won't get butter-smooth Oblivion outside though with everything turned on. No current system can do that. :(

so what speed is that dual core you have running?
Im not running low res though.

welshtom said:
depends, 3 - 3.2 ghz

Depending on resolution, that cpu will be way too slow for SLI.

need to be pushing over 3ghz.

Tom

Oh right so what you are saying is that an opty dual 2.8ghz is way to slow for SLI.

But just another 200mhz running at 3ghz is not?

BTW what cooling are you using?

stop being so condescending! read the thread thats primarily aimed at you.

I said at low res that opty prob will be the bottleneck! I didnt say mine would be better or that it would not be a bottleneck .In fact i said 3.5ghz is still cpu limited.

Read before you post next time.

And a mach 2 is my cooling.

Hey hold on a min you have taken my post in completely the wrong context

It was a genuine question.Info is needed for me with regards to SLI.
And if its worth overclocking my cpu a bit more.

I have no first hand experience really with scalable link interface.

Thats all
