7950 Vapor X 1440p Benches

Got this card too and didnt have any trouble adjusting the voltage. Scroll down in trixx and its there at the botom (under the li thing)

Flashed mine with a sapphire 7970 bios which upped the default voltage and clocks. Overclocks seemed a lot more stable too. As far as I know you can use the bios switch on the card to change back to the other bios if one isnt working. I'm no expert though so don't quote me on that :D

Is there a way to flash a particular bios? i.e Can I flash the normal bios and keep the boost bios intact.

Also did you use the 7970's ghz bios? Which one did you use?

Thanks

Have they....Where?

When I tried overclocking the boost bios and normal bios clocks even when I reset in Trixx it retained the new speeds. It may be a Windoes 8 issue.

That whole thread is about the problems you are having. Post 58 has a guy that was in contact with sapphire and he got an email back stating that sapphire engineers said the cards were not voltage locked. The best results came from a guy that flashed a 7970 bios onto his card. Think he got to 1250 stable on the core.

as they say on overclock.net. Thanks +rep :D

edit - I created that thread as well. Must learn to check threads I create more often :p

Theres a button on the side on the card that faces out when the cards installed. Little blue one with an S on it. Pushed in is the boost bios, out it standard.

I just pushed it in and then flashed that one.

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/...r=Sapphire&model=HD+7970&interface=&memSize=0

I used the top one - core/mem 1000/1450

I booted into dos and used atiflash, cant remember the exact site that I got the 'how to' from but sure there are plenty about.

As an aside I take no responsibility for any mishaps that happen if you give this a go :D

You managed to adjust the voltage before you flashed the 7970 bios right?

just some info that the bios' are different.

No Boost

yup

Could do it in both trixx and afterburner.
Disabled the overdrive thing in CCC, not sure if that makes any difference though.

Great, now I'm kicking myself for not grabbing it at £239.99 on Today Only because now it's £251.99 on This Week Only :(

Oh well, I can wait a while :D

Fingers crossed, I'm using forced voltage in MSI afterburner as TRIXX is doing some weird **** and affects the readings in GPU-Z for some strange reason.

I'm running benches atm, so far at 1000Mhz GPU clock I've not moved the Voltage slider and I've not had a crash......yet.

Will upload my spreadsheet in a few hours.

edit - wtf gpu-z showed highest clock at 850Mhz.

My Vapour X runs the best HeavenDX11 at stock... ?? As soon as I either press the button for 950Mhz or use Trixx / Afterburner it starts to report lower fps and scores... I have tried several runs... any clues? currently on 12.8...

My only thought is that perhaps its struggling to get the voltage it needs to run at the higher clock. what PSU are you using?

try upping the voltage to 1025 in trixx and see if that has any effect

Plenty of go juice :) 550W Fatal1ty Power Supply with an additional 250W Thermaltake Power Express SLI Certified PSU - The VapourX was connected with a 8 Pin to the main PSU and the 6 Pin to the Thermaltake, but after having poor results, I've connected both to the Fatal1ty with similar results.

I've seen the VDDC move up, from 950mv to over a volt when benching with Heaven and GPU-z. Its the 'boost' version of the VapourX and I'm thinking that its just not going to clock over its 2 bios settings of 850Mhz and 950Mhz

For the Nvidia route, it isn't cheap but AMD passive is still a good option and not that expensive for a semi decent monitor.

AMD does active 3D as well gregster, I bought one of the cheap Sammy's which does active 60fps FS 3D all in for about the same price as the 3D kit costs. :)

my trouble is I love it and keep banging on about how good it is.

+1,

Love it myself, if it wasn't for the 3D, I wouldn't be gaming much at all now.

The maximum my Vapor X can go is:

1100/1520 @ 1114V. This gives a max temp of 67, max fan profile at 50, which is around 2000rpm. At this profile I find the noise acceptable.

However, benching using those in Unigene 1080p 4AA, Normal Tess. I get: 65.6FPS. Min 44.3 Max 138.7. It's like the card doesn't like increase in performance when I go over 60 degrees. If I up the volts in case their isn't enough voltage it doesn't make a difference. My PSU is a Seasonic Platinum 860W.

The reason I say this is because at

1040/1520 @ 1044V I get 68.3FPS Min 45.5 Max 143.3. 61 degrees.

I'm using the latest WHQL 12.8 Drivers and the card's ASIC FWIW is 89.4%.

I don't like this card one bit unfortunately. My 7850 HIS IceQX which cost £100 less gave 60FPS in Unigene using the same settings, considering it's price it was much more value for money.

I did flash using the Sapphire 7970 bios and I get the same results when overclocking.

Maybe I should consider the Windforce 7950 or just get the GTX670. But I am after a card which offers good value for money taking into mind it's performance vs cost. So I don't know where to go from here.

I get 1909 score/75.8 FPS with normal tess and 4xAA @ 1110/1500. Max temp 60C on auto fan (max fan speed 38%).
Try reinstalling the drivers.

I didn't know this and being honest Tommy, I don't much about AMD 3D except what I have seen with my brothers and mates (both passive). Also, I have not seen any other Nvidia 3D except for the 3D vision 2. I read up quite extensively and found that the lightboost makes 3D better in the fact of how dark 3D is on active glasses and the lightboost compensates for this by also boosting up to over 100% brightness and dimming again.

For me, I jumped into the deep end so to speak with only seeing 3D in the Cinema and on the odd display TV in the electical shops. The thing I did notice was ghosting on the passive AMD (not sure if this was because it was AMD or the monitors response time) and if I had seen this prior to my purchase, it could have turned me away from 3D full stop. I am glad I made the leap though and haven't looked back since. I urge any gamer to at least try it once :)
