7970 crossfire and 3 27" monitors for eyefinity, advice on what to get and why?

That's a very nice looking set-up there, Surveyor.

Thank you kindly.

I replaced the DGM stands with Ergotron Neo-Flex LCD stands as I like my monitors to sit higher and the DGM stands were rubbish anyway.

I got the DGM monitors as they have the connection options I need and the warranty is with OcUK.

I have 2 PCs connected up:

1) 2 x dual link DVI and DP

2) dual link DVI and 2 x DP

Could someone spec me 3 thin bezeld 27" monitors and 2 7970's please

If it's a good 750w you should be fine

My vote for monitors goes to Samsung S27A750D's, expensive but worth EVERY penny IMO.

Also, please do take into consideration, are 27" screens really the right size for you? They can be quite painful for gaming if you like to sit close to your monitors, whiplash and all that :p

Windforce 7970s IMO

Surveyor, what gfx card(s) you running?

Beasty6 - what case do you run?

Two non-reference cards's are difficult to cool properly due to the way they dump hot air in the case. If you haven't got decent PCI-E slot cooling via a side fan (to extract the hot air away) or some other form of cool air being pushed over them, card two will dump hot air all over card one and it will run pretty hot.

Whatever you buy you need to consider everything working together.

There's no point in buying three 120Hz monitors with DisplayPort being the only input capable of working at 120Hz unless you buy graphics cards that can provide the necessary outputs.

Not unless you're happy for your 120Hz monitors not to work at 120Hz in Eyefinity.

Remember that most HD 7970s only have 2 DP outputs and you can only use the outputs from 1 card in CrossFire.

You'd need something like the MSI Lightning as the first card as it has 4 DP outputs.

Not sure if it's the only card with more than 2.

If you want 120Hz and AMD cards then your choices are somewhat limited.

For the gaming PC I still have the three unlocked HD 6950s in TriFire.

I can get playable frame rates at 7680x1440 by turning down game settings but it really needs more power/VRAM.

I doubt I'll be upgrading this generation though and will probably make do for now.

My other PC has a HD 6850 and a HD 6450 in at the moment as they're the cards I had to hand with the necessary connections for the 3 monitors.

The 7970 in my local store is a refrence 7970, im going to get ot sometime in the week, i would like to spend no more than 250 per monitor, but im going to buy one first and have a play with the 7970 then add the other card and 2 monitors when funds come avalible, any other monitors i should look at? Thos bezels please but if i cant for the money then ill have to live with it lol

Im using a cm 690 ii lite, i have 2 exaughst fans, 1 at top and 1 at rear i also have 2 intakr fans 1 at front and 1 at side blowing over the gpu, should case be changed aswell to maybe a bigger full tower? Haf x etc?

Not sure what the performance of that case is like. It's fairly decent if memory serves me.

You should be fine. It's just if you have a budget case then two non-reference cards are a no-no.

Yes i do, changing case is the least of my worrys, getting a 7970 and a 27" monitor to play with is first

Will the refrence design be ok for me then?

Just want to shift this 480 and be able to play games without constantly worrying about heat

If you're eventually planning on getting three 120Hz monitors then you should decide which of those you want so you can see how you're going to connect them to your graphics card(s).

This.

Also, I think non ref will be better. This ofcourse does depend on your case choice though. The Buddhists had a point about interconnectedness :p

The order I would do it in:
Monitors
Graphics
Case

Then order the whole lot in one go :D
