I know you said you want a SUV or Estate, but have you considered a FN2 Civic? We have one and it's amazing as a family car. Huge boot and practicality id great.

You can get a 2010 2.2 CTDi EX (Ex is top spec) for your budget. The engine is pretty decent and punchy and can return 60mpg on a motorway run.

I think they look pretty good too.

Practically I think they are really good, I've just never been a fan of the FN2 shape

Ideally after an estate for the dog, cheers though
Which breed of dog? I could fit two Labs comfortably in the back of my old Insignia (I'm assuming Mondeos are comparable in boot size).

Without knowing your specific circumstances, be careful not to unnecessarily limit your options - for example: how many times a year do you actually throw in the dog, kids and baggage for several days? If it's not many times, would it be too inconvenient to consider a roof box? Might not be on the car for 95% of the year and means you can almost buy any hatch/estate.

Also, as has been alluded to, drop the diesel requirement. Granted, there are less decent petrol cars out there these days in this class/size (shame really) but the saving won't be significant enough to completely overlook a petrol that otherwise ticks all the boxes.

Hungarian Vizsla,

It's the one thing I like about the A4 avant. Open the boot, jump in the back no fuss. My previous experience of hatchbacks and saloons is that it's not as easy as this. Parcel shelf, and there's usually a lip on the boot of saloons/hatch's

I'd happily go for a petrol, but at my budget it doesn't get me into the newer efficient turbo petrol engines. And I can't justify the running costs of the A4, and not sure what would be better in petrol form. So the diesel for it's low down power and efficiency is unfortunately ticking my boxes

Thank you, found this useful. the D4 would be ideal for me. Guessing it's more efficient than the D5 but with similar power?

It seems they changed the spec in the following model years compared to mine!

D4 is a D5 with a reduced stroke, more efficient but more highly strung. If you don't want to ever remap it then I don't see why you wouldn't go for it.

The 4-pot D3 & D4 have EGR problems but I don't think the V50 ever came with them. But double check to be sure!

Having switched from a Mondeo hatchback to an accord estate myself last year, I wouldn't go back to a hatchback now. The flexibility afforded by the boot in the estate is great. It doesn't often get used but when it's needed it's well worth it.
