8600GT witha 300watt psu.

300w would be more than enough for your rig if it was a quality psu. My rig does'nt even pull that much with the GPU and CPU 100% loaded. Bestec psu's (if that's what you have) are not quality psu's though. Still, it may work if you want to try. Worst thing that can happen is that it blows up and takes your other components with it.

This man speaks sense. I wish you luck.

It's good that it didn't die instantly, but by no means an indication that it isn't now deteriorating. A 16V laptop will run on 18V for a while, sometimes as long as a couple of months. However the motherboard then dies, to the surprise and anger of the owner who figures that since it worked to start with it can't have been the problem. Please do let us know if it kicks the bucket, or if it's still fine 3 months in, as it will help with similar queries in the future. Could go either way really.

Good luck :)

I'm doing almost exactly the same thing, running a 3850 card on a 250 watt psu.

Firefight gets too busy in L4D the g-card tries to draw too much so the powersupply tells me to get lost, and goes into a coma.

For mooching about on the net, doing actual work and so on it's fine. You'll only see system instability if you start pushing the card/processor.

It may last a short time, but don't rely on that PSU. I have a cheap 400W PSU lying around as a spare/temp/test psu just in case there is a problem with one of the other ones, but I wouldn't trust it for long.

Make a new power supply unit your next purchase.
