If you mainly game then I highly doubt there will be a big difference between what you have and the new CPU as it is just tweaked coffee lake with 2 extra cores, The single threaded performance, which is what games love, Won't be that much higher.

This thread still going hehe.

I bought a PSVR and have been pleasantly distracted by that. The PC, upgrades or otherwise, lies dormant for now.

Man I'm bored so have been pc tinkering, got some RGB goodness coming.

Thoughts still holding true re 8600k Vs 9700k?

I have the same CPU and have considered the upgrade too. But I can’t really justify it. The only real upgrade is 9900k.
I have looked at my usage and personally I am not running out of any grunt or the cpu slowing down. I’ve realised it’s still more than enough for my needs.

personally I would save, wait it out and see what both amd and intel can offer on a new platform. That is where I will be investing.

Very much so. If you want to upgrade. I'd get 3700x 3800x or 3900x. Or wait for new cpu's from intel + amd which should be here around late 2020, early 2021.

9700k with 8 core/8 thread would be a complete waste IMO vs 6c/6t on the 8500k.

I've been rocking a 9700k since launch and have an 8700 in my work machine. There's very little in it at all. I'm personally waiting for the new AMD stuff and will be upgrading then.

If you've got a spare £350 lying around and you can get the R0 9700K, as an overclocker, then it might prove a nice little boost for you. The secret sauce of the 9700K is the overclocking headroom you generally get because it doesn't have HT, plus it runs cooler than the 9900K. It really only makes sense to get one if you intend to overclock it. Eight 9700k's have passed through my hands and six did 5.2Ghz (other two 5.1 Ghz) with ~1.30v mainly on Z370 boards using standard air cooling/low end CLC. In this scenario you'd see a ~25%-30% improvement where applicable.

Though at this stage of proceedings I'd be inclined to stick it out unless the games you're playing are not running smoothly and wait for the next round of CPU releases. If you're still inclined at that time then you might even be able to pick up some cheaper ones that should be around at that time if a platform change isn't to your liking.

Nope everything smooth here. I'll buy some time by lapping and delidding then just for fun. Though selling on may be more problematic,a 8600k used in 2020 probably doesn't go for much used anyway.

I should have asked really if 6 Vs 8 cores has any validity.

There is only a few games that are limited by the 6 core 6 thread also there is a couple of games with dodgy drm that will stutter on a 6 core 6 thread.

Overall the 8 core should be smoother and more future proof.

More cores and threads is better at multitasking.

Not worth upgrading the 8600k though.

buying a 9700k now is rough, you're outdated and behind next gen consoles the day you buy your CPU.

Afterall the consoles are basically using a ryzen 4800HS APU and go look at benchmarks between this APU and the 9700k - I'll save you some time, the 9700k loses pretty badly

Thanks for answer what are your concerns with the next gen consoles though?

Similar boat with an 9600k at 4.8, almost bought a 9900k last week, but for what I get for AMD equivalent it's just very hard to buy it.

Honestly gaming a lot on high end games at 1440p 95hz and 9600k is doing alright, had it since 2018 so only another year or so and I can justify getting whatever affordable 12 core 24 thread or more AMD is out at that time that destroys the consoles.

Might get the new Xbox or PS5 in the meantime as well.

New consoles are always over hyped though certainly this gen looks interesting. It's the low FPS of the average console game that really bothers me tbh.

Last gen's CPU was basically tablet level potato already when new by PC standards.
Now it's different.

I'm also in the same boat a bit, 8600k@5Ghz doing everything I want and not even bottlenecking my 2080Ti but I'm resolved to wait for Zen3 :) (bought some nice 3600 8pack Ram whilst it was on offer to tide me over)
