Simply the question is as in title. Wish to future proof things in my system and the graphics card is something that needs to change in order do that.

Will it work alright with my DS4?

And is it much of a step up in terms of graphic quality?

Thanks in advance.

The 8800GTS is a great step up from an X1900XT, you'll love it. :)

It'll work fine in your motherboard too, and the image quality increase is great from what I hear. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 8800GTS can handle 16xAA in games.

What he said, the GTS can handle 16xAA also youll be set for Crysis as it runs great on the GTS and GTX, oh and Ulf get on MSN ffs :( :p.

Well I replaced my 1900XT for an 8800GTS and I use the DS4 with an E6600, and tbh if you game @ 1280 x 1024 you wont be any better off as the 1900XT can handle any game @ those resolutions and even @ 1600 x 1200, but IQ is very good on the GTS but that said the drivers are pants and some games I cant even do 1280 x 1024, I have a dell 2007WFS monitor and games like COD2 is awesome with every thin maxed out, so if you dont game @ high resolutions then you should wait and maybe get a 8600GT when they come out as it because an 8800 would just be more power than you need or would even get to use!

I disagree for one reason,

GTS can last him for at least 2 years or something and within that period he will probably get a new monitor and will then need to run games at high resolutions such as 1650*1080 for example and then GTS takes place! :p

My old x1900xt couldn't run games as good as this even at 1280x1024, i can hit 16xaa at that rez now, i play most of my games with 8xaa@1600x1200 and it flys.

Great card i bench mine at 650\1000 and got 10580 in 2006 more than happy with that performance.

Went from a X1900XTX to the 8800GTS and there is a deffinate improvement over the X1900XTX.

For a start the image quality is much better.

I can run 8xAA and 16xAnniso on pretty much everything.

Far better card imho.

With repect, I disagree.

-This arguement about it not being worth it at 1280*1024 is a dud, that simply isn't my experience - the speed difference is very clear on newer intensive titles.

-The image quality alone is worth it either way, it's a massive revolution in Graphics cards, I can't describe it any other way, nothing else touches it, 16AF+8AA in every game....

-Driver quality is good now, except for Vista, but thats a couple of weeks off anyway.

-Also, nows the time to sell a 1900xt before R600 arrives and the value of your current card drops down a hole.

I always say this. Newer titles will stress a card much more @ the same res, so it's better to go for the more powerful card.

Yup, I play everything at 1280x1024 and people have been saying 'nah don't bother if you are only playing 1280 res then theres no point' since the x800's...

Since then i've had:

x800pro >> x850XTPE >> 7800GT >> 7800GTSLi >> X1900XTX >> 8800GTS

And I can tell you now there is most certainly a massive differnce between those cards, and if i'd listened to those naysayers from the start apparently my x800pro would be all I needed to run 1280 because anything more was a waste at that res...

I'll just add my 2c as well.

I went from a 7800GTX to the GTS and I was happy I did. Running 1280x1024, so like HeX has said, you would think it wouldn't be worth it but it was. I can run the graphics card with Supersampling on, no optimisations, 16xAA + 16xAF happily in most games! In fact, I think the only problem is my CPU slowing me down still (2.8Ghz A64).

The IQ is very sharp!

So to the OP, you should be able to get a good deal on the XT and use the money to help with the GTS. Then you can enjoy the best IQ available and hopefully some DX10 title games!

GTS is not a waste for 1280x1024, you will be able to have everything maxed in games, have maximum AA/AF everything, and get frame-rates in the 100's, a waste, hell no, plus it will do that for a lot longer than it would at higher resolutions, so your going to get more life out of it as well, look at me, x1800 XT 512mb here, got it when they came out over a year ago, and still cuts through everything maxed in 1280x1024 today, if i was gaming at higher resolutions could i do that, nope id have upgraded long before now, but seen as ive no need to upgrade im saving money, as im not having to keep upgrading my card every 5 minutes as it starts to struggle at high resolutions with details etc... maxed. :)

Will if you say so, there is nothing that the 8800GTS can do that the 1900XT could not do @ 1280 X 1024 both cards will hit over the 60FPS with all the eye candy on, it not possible for the eye to notice the difference 60FPS and 120FPS so the only difference that should hold any arguement is the IQ over the 1900, any one with a dell 24 tft will tell you that @ 1920 x1200 and low AA & AF a game will look better than @ 1280 x 1024 with higher AA & AF, you dont have to take my word for it, test show this @ respectable hardware reviewers like CUSTOM PC!

Id sell it now, be difficult to get rid of end March/begining of April when R600 comes along, everyones buying GTS's etc.. now, and Nvidia are going to release their other cards as well, the low/mid ranges, the 320mb GTS is coming, the 8600's etc... no chance getting shot of an x1900 then, im just gona build another rig with my old parts and slap my x1800 in it as ive got buckleys getting rid of it.

If I had a Radeon X1900XT in my system now and felt that a graphics upgrade was needed I would be tempted to hold off a month or two and see what new goodies are released from both nVidia and AMD/ATI . . .

The question to ask yourself is can you 'struggle' on for a month or two with your X1900XT? :D

LOL I cant do that with 7800GT in every game except Oblivion! And also you have just contradicted yourself! As you have just said your 1800XT cuts through everything, so if you dont need to upgrade from an 1800XT then upgrading from a 1900XT should follow the same logic don't you think?

read this review here: http://anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2895&p=4

looks like the gtx struggles to even give decent framerates in rainbow six vegas at a lame rez of 1280x960. so i doubt the gts is gonna really be of any use with 16xAA in the newer games.
