Hey guy's im toying with getting a nvidia 8800 ultra and i was wondering can it be overclocked as i heard that its a gtx 8800 in wolfs clothing.
do you think i would be better getting the bfg wc gtx 8800 which is around the same price and oc it.
what would be your views on this.

The Ultra has a slightly different core to the GTX and is capable of higher clocks, so it's not just an overclocked GTX.

Whether it's worth the extra money is another issue, since the GTX can handle any game at stock.

the core is not different....... still the G80....

its worth if u overclock.... the ultra has different voltage regulators and the core gets 1.35V instead of 1.3 on the gtx.... the core clocks very well apparently and ppl reached 740+ with water.... no mods....

the memory timings are looser than the GTX and the shader speeds are faster.. the memory though is 0.8ns instead of the 1.1ns of the gtx...

is it worth the extra money? probably not... but it really comes down on how big you want your DELETED to be... or how obsessed you are...

oh yeah.... i already ordered 2 for myself .... lol

are you sure about that? i would swear its still the A2 ?....... got pics?

Yet the Ultra is distinct for several reasons. First and foremost, Nvidia says the Ultra packs a new revision of G80 silicon that allows for higher clock speeds in a similar form factor and power envelope. In fact, Nvidia says the 8800 Ultra has slightly lower peak power consumption than the GTX, despite having a core clock of 612MHz, a stream processor clock of 1.5GHz, and a memory clock of 1080MHz (effectively 2160MHz since it uses GDDR3 memory).

awesome.. thanks buddy.. didnt know about the core revision

Still the same core imo, what difference does the ao3 stamp make ? even the gts cards can do 612 and much more.

Its not the same, the TDP has actually dropped at the higher stock clocks and increased core voltage, just means more overhead on average. Does it make any difference in day to day use compared to a GTX? Not one bit, its a complete waste of money unless you plan on setting world records or need the ego boost.

and core voltage can be changed in bios.

What has that to do with what I was saying?

TDP is the thermal design power. It's an approximation of the maximum power consumed under normal circumstances. The core has been revised, it uses less power at higher frequencies and with a higher core voltage, remember that's V² for power. So its more efficient than the previous core revision, fag packet calc says something like 10%-15%. That equates to more headroom. Still not worth it.

They do go well though...

At the end of they day its not worth getting an Ultra, get a GTX and clock it, thats all you need to know.

hmm, have seem the evga one for £469 which is not too bad, considering they overclock to about 700mhz max roughly on air.

Not bad? christ you must have a lot of money :)

lol should have made myself more clear, not bad since the evga gtx costs £400 i suppose if you can pay 400 squeezing 70 more should not be too much problem.

frankly myself i am leaning toward 2 x 2900xt, got no choice really gaming on 30".

They cost way too much at the moment, and performance boost is just not worth it!
