Simple question, is it worth paying the c£50 extra for an 8800GT with 1GB of mem over the 512MB versions for 1920x1200 gaming? I don't really want to pay the extra for a GTX and I don't think it would fit in my case anyway (Evo SG01). Is a 1GB 8800GT my best option?

I was specifically looking at getting one of these.

The rest of my system is a Q6600 with 4GB of PC2-6400 RAM

Maybe a 8800GTS would be better and its cheaper than the 8800GT 1GB :)
The only things that concerns me about the GTS is the size and the noise. I've also heard that a GT can out perform a GTS under some circumstances.

Mine was silent.

The GTS is the better card.

The 1GB GT is a waste of space and money and will not help you one bit.

The GTS has the quieter fan - I know that much. Also, I believe you're getting the wrong end of the stick here, the new GTS 512MB is faster than the GT, the GTS 512MB gets the full G92 core (128 shaders, 64 TMUs) compared to the GT (112 shaders, 56 TMUs) and comes clocked higher. The old G80 GTS is slower than the GT in most cases.

Just to clarify - 8800 GTS 512MB/1024MB = fast.
8800 GTS 320/640MB = Not as fast.

What?

The 512 GTS is a lot more silent than the GT, has far superior cooling, often clocks further, and offcourse has higher stock clocks.

You're probably thinking about the old GTS 640 and 320, the 512 one is superior to both the GT and the old GTS.

Do not buy 1024MB ever!(ever meaning before the nextgen cards come out), and do not get the GTS, it's not worth the price premium over the GT.

1GB GPU = marketing gimmick for dummies

A guy at work assures me the 2400xt 1GB he bought for his dad is amazing because it has 1gb ram so its twice as fast as a card with 512mb. Makes sense doesn't it..........:D

hes having you for a laugh then, as it has been previously said the 256bit bus on the gt's limit the RAM. dont waste your money. GT 512mb or if u want pay the extra bit for the GTS 512mb which is better than the GT but not by much really.

Right some good advice, cheers guys. So any 512MB GTS would fit the bill?

Are the newer (512MB) 8800 GTS cards any bigger than the 8800 GT. I previously had a Gigabyte 8800GT with a zalman cooler fitted but I returned it because it a made a strange whining noise when playing games. The GT fitted comfortably in my case but any bigger and I might have problems.

The GTS cards are about twice the size of the GT, they have a dual slot cooler instead of a single slot cooler. And i'd really argue against getting a GTS but your choice of course.

I'm talking length not width with regards to size. Why would you argue against the GTS, not worth the extra money?

Bare in mind that if I go for the GT I probably get this as I've heard the cooling is excellent and very quite. The stock GT coolers are just too noisy.
